Is Sword Artist Online okay for a 13yo?

I have two children. One is turning 4 next month and his older brother is 13. He gets mad at me when I don't call him 'Flame Wolf'(a nickname he gave himself) It started to become a bit of an issue when he even raised his voice at his grandmum because she laughed and said she wouldn't call him that. This all started around the time he was really getting into these japanese comics called Manga. He's also been watching an anime called sword artist online and won't stop talking about it. I came in to collect his dirty laundry yesterday and what I saw on his screen is what got me worried. There were two girls tied up on a bed crying and guys leaning over the females and licking them and then another man comes in and his eye began to bleed and bursts out of his head. I asked him what he was watching and he said "it's just sao mom". I don't really know anything about anime so I don't know if sword artist online is safe for him to watch. Would you let your kids watch sao? Have any of you guys watched it and know if it's safe for my kid to watch?

You might want to repost this on a more suitable board - not sure you’ll get many relevant replies on the films board

I’ve watched Sword Art Online and found it fine. It’s basic premise is a video game where you have to kill other real life players in order to survive, win and get back to the real world though so it does feature a lot of death, and in typical anime fashion the murders are dramatised and a little gore-y at times

Thegirlhasnoname · 30/11/2019 07:54

It’s rated PG13 though

I would sit through a couple of episodes and take it from there.

Not watched sword art online myself but if it involves death scenes, the Japanese aren't exactly shy about blood (or tentacles) albeit in a very OTT stylised way.

If it's PG13, watch it and unless it raises your red flags, let him watch.

If you've not seen much Japanese work, just be aware their boundaries can seem odd especially their treatment of school age girls and levels of violence.

If he does get into comics properly, just be aware the Japanese are masters of insanely long series which can be expensive.

Try him with some of the Studio Ghibli stuff too.

Flame Wolf 😂

I have never heard of this but based on the description above it sounds really unsuitable for teens to watch . Gory violence, murder and twisted male female interactions . You had best check it out yourself i think but just your boy's obsession with it sounds concerning.
