Anyone seen it? I felt it was a bit of a let down after all the hype.

Yeah. Rubbish.
And inaccurate.

James Hetfield said all of 4 words, I hoped that he would be in it a lot more.
Bloody love James Hetfield me.

It wasn’t the story I was expecting it almost Romancise him the brutal killings were part of the story and I felt their story should have been shown. I think zac was good for what he was given but could have done so much more. I watched the Bundy film from 2002 which was more chilling

Saw it last night, exceptionally good acting by zac efron I thought. It wasn’t really let down for me in as far as you have to view it from the perspective of what the director was trying to achieve ..what he was attempting to get across was how charming Ted Bundy was, as opposed to the perceived idea of a serial killer being an obvious ...well serial killer. It showed how successfully these people can integrate into normal society, be charming, witty and just so normal, and also his arrogance In representing himself as counsel at his trial. I think he succeeded in that, it was never supposed to be a ‘horror/stalk and stab’ type movie - it was adapted from Liz Koepflers book which showed her perspective although I have to admit I found her quite irritating with her ‘sorrow’ over such a monster which really she knew he was. What did you find disappointing about it ? If I may ask ?

Fstar · 04/05/2019 20:14

Let down for me too, the documentary on netflix was better

Fatted · 04/05/2019 20:16

I enjoyed it, watched it last night.

I liked it was from the girlfriend's perspective and kind of showed what a person in real life would have seen or known about the crimes of they hadn't been involved in them personally. If it was fiction, you would be asking 'Did he do it or not?'. But because you already knew he was guilty and confessed to it, it felt like you were just waiting for that to happen.

crosser62 · 04/05/2019 20:45

I think it wasn’t good because it didn’t explain how she didn’t suspect anything. It seemed to whitewash over that side of things.
It didn’t say how he escaped from the courthouse but then suddenly had his vw beetle back, was drinking in bars but had only the clothes he was stood up in when he escaped.
His mother just appeared out of nowhere.
It didn’t go deeply into anything, was superficial and basic and scraped the surface of what happened.
Didn’t want it to be stabby/gory but to explain more about the story.
Disappointed.

I got bored with it quite quickly. Not what I was expecting at all.

I did like John Malkovich though.

Gre8scott · 06/05/2019 08:08

I thought the casting of Zac Efron was really clever as he is extremely handsome and charming and youve never think hed hurt anyone which was the point of the film as his girlfriend didnt believe he did it

TeaForTheWin · 08/05/2019 18:30

I liked zac for the part. I always thought the real bundy looked crazy and was pompus but zac was more of a...suave charismatic. Maybe that's what some girls saw in bundy.

One little issue I had was -
There was a bit where his gf said something along the lines of - when i'm with him feel on top of the world or...like nothing' and I think that's how many people feel when they are with a narcissist - because of the way they are TREATED. BUT in this film you never see her mistreat her really, he only idolises her non stop. You'd almost think it was true love. And it makes it seem like her statement was just a self-esteem thing. He doesn't even display rage at her for abandoning him. So I think they missed a trick there as they didn't show how quickly the narcissist can jump from 'love' to hate. We got a flicker of it with the other girl though before he was sentenced I suppose.

I guess the idea was to show it from her perspective that she had no idea whatsoever.

Did someone say James Hetfield? Grin Is this thread about the Ted Bundy film? I remember now that I saw James had a part in it, shame he’s not in it much. I’m not sure I’ll watch it, I saw the original about 20 years ago and it affected me so much, don’t think a film has ever horrified me so much.

Fairylea · 08/05/2019 18:43

I thought it was really good...! I’m surprised people don’t like it. I think the psychology of the girlfriend etc was really interesting- I’ve watched things about the true story beforehand and also the ted bundy tapes thing on Netflix. I thought it was brilliantly acted and an interesting perspective.

TeaForTheWin · 08/05/2019 18:54

Did anyone notice Hailey Joel osmont in it (the wee boy from the Sixth Sense). I didn't even recognise him until the second or third scene he was it. He was playing the new boyfriend after bundy went to jail.

TapasForTwo · 08/05/2019 18:55

A lot of people who have seen this film don’t seem to know that it is based on the book that his girlfriend wrote, so it is from her perspective only. I thought it was very good.

“it almost romanticised him”

Ted Bundy was an evilly charismatic man, and this was what the director was trying to portray. They didn’t show the brutal killings because Liz wouldn’t have known about them. I think that showing them would have made it into a particularly nasty film to watch.

The Netflix documentary was from the police’s perspective so it is unfair to compare the two.

“I think it wasn’t good because it didn’t explain how she didn’t suspect anything”

But she did. She admitted at the end that she had called the police about the killings at the lake.

“It didn’t say how he escaped from the courthouse”

It showed him being allowed into the library, where he jumped from the window. Did you actually watch the film crosser62?

Zac was brilliant imho
Very good film and not too graphic visually
but still portrayed the terrible crimes of that monster Bundy effectively
