Inspirational movies for mixed race 6 year old girl?

Hi.

I'm a (white) uncle making a memory-card full of movies for my niece, who just got her first tablet for Christmas.

I already have a practically endless list of great kid's movies in mind - but I would love to include more movies with black (or non-white) heroes/heroines.

I'd be very grateful for any ideas

Thanks

How about Disney's Princess & The Frog and Moana?

Vitalogy · 13/01/2019 18:46

Belle (2014)

BluthsFrozenBananas · 13/01/2019 18:54

Home, 2015.

Gabriella Douglas Story - First Black gymnastic to win gold at the Olympics.
Moana.
Mulan.
Doc MCstuffins.
Descendants- Not a main character but cinderella is mixed.
An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win - Great inspiring movie on Prime Kids - but she may be a little young at 6 (have a look at the trailer).
Lilo & Stitch
Dr. Dolittle 3.

It's really sad there isn't many films for children with people of colour. Really really sad.

Annie (the new one).

There is a Black Cinderella film that my kids absolutely loved.

And Akeelah and the Bee is good.
The Dr Doolittle films with Eddie Murphy maybe.
The Wiz

Karate Kid (new one)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/01/2019 19:21

I was going to say karate kid! What about the Indiana Jones with the (irritating) Asian boy? Or big trouble in Little China?

WickedUncle · 13/01/2019 21:56

Thank you guys/gals, keep them coming!

Well this is a controversial suggestion due to recent events but my two loved 'The Cosby Show' when they were that age.

The more modern alternative is 'Blackish' but six is too young for that but the Cosby Show is really quite wholesome and has fantastic role models. Ironically.

RiddleMeThis2018 · 14/01/2019 19:23

I second the Princess and the Frog- great music, great story.

A wrinkle in time

Vitalogy · 15/01/2019 05:43

The Time Machine (2002) Although though maybe for when she's a bit older, the Morlocks!

Harebellmeadow · 15/01/2019 05:49

Havent seen Belle yet because am worried it will be too sad for DDs, due to the horrid racism of the day. Possibly watch it first before giving it to an 8 year old - but definitely for later. Looks sumptuous and Gugu Mgabatha-Raw (spelling?) is one of the most beautiful actresses i have ever seen.

Harebellmeadow · 15/01/2019 05:51

If she was younger i would recommend Disneys Doc Mcstuffins but 8 is the upper border for the series, aimed at 5 year olds i think.

Also Nella the Princess Knight, a Nickolodeon series, may be more suitable for her age.

Harebellmeadow · 15/01/2019 06:01

Just saw she is 6 - Doc Mcstuffins might just do!

Vitalogy · 15/01/2019 06:38

@Harebellmeadow I re watched Belle trailer. I think you're right. An older watch. A true story of a strong woman.

Harebellmeadow · 15/01/2019 07:26

And the Royal Wedding! So nice to see a ‘different’ princess bride.

CountFosco · 15/01/2019 20:20

Akeelah and the Bee
Kirikou and the Sorceress
Pocahontas

mogtheexcellent · 07/02/2019 11:02

A Wrinkle in time - definitely! Am even going to make my white DD watch it.

Also try studio ghibli films. Arietty and Kikis delivery service are excellent with good female role models.

mogtheexcellent · 07/02/2019 11:03

I saw Belle over Christmas and thought it excellent but definitely for older kids.

I watched Hidden Figure with DS aged 10 yesterday. Very inspirational (and especially one for the mathematically inclined, in that the lead character, an African American woman, effectively is the brains behind John Glenn successfully orbiting earth). Great 60s Motown style soundtrack too.

MabelStark · 23/02/2019 01:28

Queen of Katwe?

MsTSwift · 24/02/2019 22:36

She’s maybe abit young but we took our two to see Hidden Figures true story and involves maths. Ours were transfixed but youngest was 9ish

IggyPoppers · 24/02/2019 22:44

Whale Rider - such a great film with a non-white girl heroine
