Wondering if the lovely people of Mumsnet can help me here.

In 2019 I have been challenged to watch at least 20 "Classic Movies" because I have been told that I have no idea what a good film is.

So can you recommend me your favourite Classic films please? Or just any Class is film that you feel an uneducated 26 year old should see?

Thanks.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/films/3241472-Classic-films-appreciation-thread-come-and-join-us Lots of lovely people here to guide you, without judging (unlike the person who made the comment to you) film snobs are usually arses. Enjoy what you like!

"Rope" by Hitchcock is amazing. Definitely recommend giving it a go!

PinkBuffalo · 01/01/2019 11:25

And a good film is only what you enjoy! But you might enjoy some of the classics.
I watched Stepbrothers with will Ferrell the other night. Not a classic, but it really made me laugh but think a lot wouldn't go for that Grin

What sort of films do you like? Comedies, disaster movies, romcoms, thrillers, horrors, fantasies, comedies, musicals? There are films identified as "classic" of all those types and more. Which do you think would most appeal?

NicoleNoPants · 19/01/2019 03:43

It happened one night
Streetcar Named Desire

MartaHallard · 19/01/2019 04:03

Casablanca
The Third Man
Brief Encounter
Now, Voyager
This Happy Breed
Great Expectations with John Mills
In fact, almost anything by David Lean, who directed several of the above

Some of the classic British war films, such as In Which We Serve, or The Dambusters, and many others.

Anything with Leslie Howard - The Scarlet Pimpernel, and the updated version, Pimpernel Smith - archaeologists vs Nazis.

And speaking of which, Raiders of the Lost Ark

-North by Northwest (Hitchcock)

-Mister Roberts (Henry Fonda) comedy/war

-The Professionals (Lee Marvin) western

-The Magnificent Seven (Yul Brynner) western

-The Great Escape (Steve McQueen) war/espionage

-A Nuns Story (Audrey Hepburn) drama

-Shane (Alan Ladd) western

-Rear Window (Hitchcock) thriller

-Hud (Paul Newman) drama

-Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman) prison

-Singing In the Rain (Gene Kelly) musical

-Out of the Past (Robert Mitchum) film noir

-Cape Fear (Robert Mitchum) thriller, original

-Dial M for Murder (Hitchcock) mystery

-Ivanhoe (Robert Taylor) knights/romance - okay it has some dated stuff but I still love it 😊

Don't think Cabaret has been mentioned.

MartaHallard · 19/01/2019 11:49

And Stagecoach. Classic western. As well as being a terrific piece of storytelling, it's got great music and the classic movie stunt.

In fact many of the John Ford/John Wayne westerns are considered classics, but if you only watch one western, it should be Stagecoach.

And I'll mention The Third Man again, because no-one else has, and it's brilliant.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 19/01/2019 15:46

FixItUpChappie I like your choices esp. The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, The Magnificent Seven, and The original Manchurian Candidate! All were introduced to me by my father and favourites of his!

claraschu How could I forget Chaplin! Great choice!

MartaHallard Cabaret is still one of my favorite movies of all time!I dressed up as Sally Bowles one Halloween and I've had a crush on Michael York since the first time I saw him in this movie.

Pazzantre1989 · 12/09/2019 15:20

Since childhood, I love to watch movies, you could say I'm a fan. As a child when there was no Internet when my parents and I went to the movies for me it was a holiday. I remember every movie which i saw.I still love going to the cinema but not to all movies. Because not enough time you know job family and etc. but I'm not upset because I watch new movies on movies123.top/. In my opinion this is a great solution for all cinema lovers.
