Where to start with this:
acting all round, especially Olivia Colman, though I feel bit unfair ranking her when Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult were so entrancing too.

Outstanding costumes and tip-top disco dancing (spoiler alert).

It's petty much plot-free on the obvious level, though based on historical events and real people. Replete with anachronistic language, but deliberately so, so trés post-modern.

I loved it.

I saw it last night.

I felt like I was watching a bawdy romp. Tom Jones, Tristram Shandy, all spring to mind. The Machiavellian twists were interesting but it was all too salacious for me.

Olivia Coleman and Emma Stone were wonderful. I really do not get the love for Rachel Weisz, I found her completely unremarkable as always. Nicholas Hoult was ok. It was a bit crazy to watch, definitely not the run of the mill plot driven film. I quite enjoyed the way the film was broken into “chapters”. I’d have been seriously bored without this device.

It was a Film4 production so it’ll be on the telly in no time. It’s not one I’ll rush to watch again.

@nothisispatrick no, she didn't kill the rabbit, but it was the shameless cruelty of her act and the fact the rabbit was suffering.

Rabbits are prey animals and so they tend to hide pain, illness or weakness. A rabbit would only scream like that if in extreme pain or if it was truly terrified.

(I have a pet rabbit, I may be a little sensitive about these things!)

Janecon · 15/01/2019 19:27

I enjoyed it but not as much as I thought I would. I loved the costumes and the cinematography but I suppose I prefer historical films to have greater accuracy - Queen Anne's reputation was basically trashed.

I think I might be the only person around who isn't wowed by Olivia Colman. I thought she was good, but not amazing. Her voice always sounds the same and she didn't sound at all posh whereas Sarah Churchill and Abigail Masham did. That felt unrealistic to me. However she does have the capacity to show great emotion - the scene when she talks about the rabbits and their birthdays was incredibly moving. But not an Oscar winning performance for me.

shutlingsloe · 15/01/2019 19:33

I thought they were pomegranates 🤔!

lily219 · 15/01/2019 19:46

Janecon - I agree re Olivia Colman. Good acting - yes, but not outstanding. I thought Jodie Comer's Villanelle in Killing Eve was stunning acting, but didn't see the same subtlety and expressiveness in Olivia Colman's role here.

RagingWhoreBag · 15/01/2019 19:58

DP and I walked out half way through! We see a lot of movies (have Cineworld membership) and have only ever walked out of about 2 others.

I just didn't get what it was supposed to be - it wasn't funny enough to be funny, or dramatic enough to be dramatic. The 'cunt' ing and lesbianism seemed designed to shock, but of course neither of those things is shocking (especially as MNer!), so I don't really know what they were trying to do.

Watching the guy phallically stroking the duck's neck on his lap was the last straw for DP who just looked at me like Confused and whispered "are you enjoying this?!" and we plotted our escape!!

I'm now slightly worried about The Crown - I can't take Olivia Colman seriously, she'll always be the mum of The Boy With An Arse For A Face to me!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/01/2019 20:02

I didn’t get it at all. Still feel slightly disturbed about it several days later. Came out feeling slightly depressed. I could have walked out halfway through, convinced it had to get better from all the plaudits it was getting!

Whatever it was, it went way over my head.

Yulebealrite · 15/01/2019 20:06

We both though it weird and crap.

Lurleene · 15/01/2019 20:07

As it ended the woman sat behind me declared it 'revolting tripe!' . That's a quote for the DVD cover when the time comes Smile

lily219 · 15/01/2019 20:18

So reassuring to hear that others weren't impressed either! There must be something brilliant in it because lots of people loved it, but it did nothing for me. Re RagingWhoreBag's comment - I did stay to the end which at least makes it better in my eyes than Whiplash (revolting) and Mr Turner (boring).

Fairyliz · 15/01/2019 21:59

I'm another one who thought it was a little strange. Liked the three main actresses but thought the story was weird.

As we left my friend said well that was interesting and I agree with her, although I am not sure if interesting good or interesting bad.

Saw this last night and thought it about equal parts brilliant and utterly bizarre. Not sure I'd say I actually liked it.

Not sure that it counts as 'music' but hated that irritating repetitive noise in a couple of scenes, it was like you were waiting for Jaws to come along.

Odd film.

Yulebealrite · 16/01/2019 15:06

I think its a bit like the Emperors New Clothes.

People want to believe it's good because of the good cast and its reviews. The reality is something different.

Valkyries · 16/01/2019 15:54

I think its a bit like the Emperors New Clothes

^^exactly what I said to my DH as we walked out - it was pile of crap

grumiosmum · 16/01/2019 18:52

Well I liked it.

Great to see a film where women have the main roles.

Babymamamama · 16/01/2019 22:32

It is overrated in my opinion and so fantastical and far from historical accuracy that I didn't enjoy it apart from the first half hour or so. I found the lesbianism quite unnecessary and kept wondering about the (male) director. For a post metoo film it made me uncomfortable all the same. There are much better films out at the moment eg Canne Palme D'Or winner "Shoplifters".

Bloomcounty · 17/01/2019 12:23

I saw this the other night, on a whim, and hadn't read up about it at all, so it all came as rather a surprise. Especially the break-dancing Whig.

I genuinely can't tell if I enjoyed it or not. Weird. That was the word we both used as we left the cinema. Weird.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/01/2019 13:00

Yes, Bloomcountry. It was weird. I saw it on my own (my dh took the kids to see Spiderman). I'm glad I didn't have my 14 year old DD with me. It's a very adult weird film.

Sarahandduck18 · 17/01/2019 18:22

Can’t wait to see it.

MsTSwift · 19/01/2019 23:32

Really enjoyed. Liked that it was different and quirky. Felt it was poking fun at other pompous period dramas. Black humour excellent strong women’s roles gorgeous interiors. Made me realise how much make up and photo shopping goes on was refreshing to see women as real women not bleached out beauties. Am same age as OC and RW and they looked real like my friends post exercise before putting on any make up!.

Calzone · 20/01/2019 22:29

I watched it this afternoon with my 16 year old son!!!! 🙈🙈🙈🙈

I did cringe a bit but generally enjoyed it.
Never heard the C word so many times in one film.

The provocative sex scenes were a bit shocking when you are with your child but the acting was brilliant.

bruffin · 20/01/2019 22:39

I really did enjoy it,
I had been to see the Queen Anne play last year and read up a bit, so knew there were inaccuracies, but the performances are so good it didnt really matter.
I never seen such sadness in an actors eyes as i ssw in Olivia Colman's

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2019 18:02

Can't believe it's possibly on mine for an Oscar.

Valkyries · 22/01/2019 21:21
