Saw it with a friend's 7 year old yesterday and none of us enjoyed it. While Emily Blunt is wonderful, the film and music left me underwhelmed. Anyone else?

Saw it today and on strength of reviews thought I would feel more enchanted by it.Enjoyable and liked all the cast-although do agree good as Julie Walters is I wish casting would give someone else the housekeeper role.
It took me half the film to get used to Emily Blunts super posh accent, slightly grated.Julie Andrews was clipped and precise diction but warmer and more natural sounding.
But the story was lovely, and cleverly wove in references to the original.

Santaclarita · 30/12/2018 22:38

I loved it. Although sadly it was slightly spoilt by two girls sitting near us who insisted on laughing and talking through the entire film, despite being told off by people in the cinema.

I thought Emily did a great job as mary poppins. I was worried about anyone replacing Julie Andrews but she did great.

lisalisa · 30/12/2018 22:43

I thought it was amazing . Was really Surprised by the films depth and teared up during the song that Michael sings in the attic about losing his wife . Loved the link to the first film wuththe admiral on the roof next door and the fantasies were wonderful like the balloons at the end and the funny language during the light dance .

Calzone · 30/12/2018 22:45

Loved it.

Seen it twice.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 30/12/2018 22:46

I cried like a baby throughout, I'm still not sure why Grin

LuluJakey1 · 30/12/2018 22:50

DH and I took DS to see it today for his 4th birthday. It was his first cinema visit too. He loved it. PIL had DD at their place and we went back for his birthday tea. I thought Emily Blunt was great and enjoyed the film but preferred the original. DS wants to go again tomorrow. (Not happening Grin )

Can anyone tell me if anyone dies in it.

Have had a few too many close deaths here don't really want harrowing death or death scenes in chirpy kids film...

confusedandemployed · 31/12/2018 08:09

No deaths in the film but one main story pillar is the fact that Michael's wife (the father in this film) died recently.

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 31/12/2018 08:54

Is it really sad

ineedaholidaynow · 31/12/2018 12:23

It is not really sad. There is one song that made me cry (l lost a parent last year so resonated with me), but I seem to cry in most films now! There are certainly more happy bits than sad bits

savagebaggagemaster · 31/12/2018 18:02

Wonderful! I may be the only person who didn't love the Meryl Streep scene; however it was a delight to see Angela Lansbury- perhaps showing my age. Wink

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 31/12/2018 18:03

I need me too, I'm an orphan now and don't want to pay to be emotionally brutalised in cinema when I want escapism.

However this doesn't sound too bad thank you!! Grin

Hoddykins · 31/12/2018 18:07

I've been waiting for the film since it was announced and I was not disappointed (I knew all the words to the soundtrack before I went, saddo)

I'm going to go and see it for the second time tomorrow in a 4DX cinema where there will be bubbles and moving seats and fog and all sorts - I'm very excited Grin

Soosiesoo · 31/12/2018 19:08

Loved it! Jacks 'cockney' accent was absolutely terrible, however!

Emily Blunt was perfect as Mary!

Snowballs4ever · 31/12/2018 20:44

I thought it was great! I liked the occasional jokes and humour for adults too. I think I preferred it to the original, maybe because the effects were much better.

mogtheexcellent · 31/12/2018 20:49

Saw it today a f it was excellent. The scene with Meryl Streep could easily have been cut though. Bit too long for my 4 year old.

Emily blunt posing was annoying. I know julie andrews did it but it was less often and more subtle.

Also loved Angela lansbury. A big surprise at the end.

Slipperboots · 31/12/2018 21:04

Far far too long. Too much trying to copy the original. Emily was far too posh and clipped.
The colours were amazing though and the costumes to die for, songs were forgettable.
Julie Walters was miscast, there was definatley a bit where she strayed into Mrs Overall...

synderella · 31/12/2018 21:38

Loved it, including Dd 10 DS 12 and Dn 4, forget the original and you will be fine. Some amazing effects. As much as I love Julie Walters I did think she was the lady from Paddington who'd jumped into another film and Meryl Streep part was just chopped in so she could be in the movie!!! Mary's costumes are great though, but the guy who plays the window cleaner is weird! That said we all enjoyed it.

PorpentinaScamander · 31/12/2018 21:46

I was underwhelmed by it.

Michael Banks was such a sap. And his moustache looked like he'd grown it just to look like a grown up.

Emily Blunt was OK. Admittedly she had some pretty big boots to fill.

Loved the idea about lost things.

Jack was rubbish. Give me Bert any day.

Overall it felt lke a low budget remake not a sequel.

Although I would actually fight Annabel for that beret she wears!

PhoenixBuchanan · 02/01/2019 05:36

Did anyone else just hear Paddington Bear whenever Michael opened his mouth? Grin

DH thought it was "fine" but I really enjoyed it. The sets and costumes were fabulous (esp the costumes that looked like paper in the Royal Doulton set piece). I loved EB's slightly haughty, acerbic Mary, and I thought the songs were better than they've been given credit for. I especially liked Lost Things, Lovely London Sky and Imagine That. It was too long though and I thought the song that Mary performs in the music hall struck a very weird note.

Tightlippedmama · 04/01/2019 22:46

The original was the first film I was taken to the cinema to see by my father who is now dead. Nostalgia on so many levels made me cry, smile and laugh.

I think I read somewhere that Emily Blunt based her MP on the one in the original books by PL Travers rather than Julie Andrews. Probably a wise move as no one out Julie Andrews Julie Andrews. I’ve not read the the books but Emma Thompson as PL Travers in ‘Saving Mr Banks’ came into my mind several times whilst watching this MP’s nuanced brittle caring. Not certain she was being the best of nannies during the cartoon sequence though. Whilst she was showing her legs off like a hussy on stage, in her Catherine Zeta-Jones in ‘Chicago’ wig, her charges found themselves in dreadful peril!

DH and I both enjoyed the idea of a large hidden group of good-looking young men in 1930s London with their own hidden language.... who’d have thought it?

Teaformeplease · 04/01/2019 23:01

We enjoyed the film but the sound volume was way too high and uncomfortable to listen too. I stuffed tissues into my ears to muffle the sound a bit but DD wouldn't. I complained to the staff afterwards but was told the volume is set by the distributors and the couldn't do anything about it. Anyone else find this or was it only an issue in my local Odeon?

PhoenixBuchanan · 05/01/2019 07:02

Tea we found the same, it was almost an assault on the ears

mnahmnah · 05/01/2019 08:32

Loved the film. But Mary Poppins’ accent far too over the top. Really grated on me. Jack’s accent was obviously put on too.

Bakingberry · 06/01/2019 19:53

I adored the film, much better then I was expecting. I think the songs will grow on people over time. Did anyone else feel that the Angela Lansbury character was perhaps offered to Julie Andrews first?
