Crimes of Grindelwald

Booked tickets to go next week. Can't wait!

When Callum Turner had only just started his career, I used to think he reminded me of Eddie Redmayne with his bone structure and lips. So casting him as his sibling seemed fitting, even though he's younger than him.

Dd dh and I all really enjoyed it, we watched it in 4dx which was great.

Did anyone else think credence looked rather hot in this movie?

Don't like Johnny depp as Grindelwald Colin Farrell did a better job being Grindelwald pretending to be someone else Imo. Jude law was better than I expected though given the timeline of Grindelwalds defeat and Voldemort being born/first meeting Dumbledore he's got some aging to do fast 😂

The problem with these films is they all feel like a set up for the next one not stories in their own right. Plus as they are playing round in the history of a world that we already know things about they are making mistakes such as McGonnagal it was jk who revealed her history so why go back on it!

Other things I think are being used to forced links between what we know and the new films. I'm sure there are more revelations to come that will change things again. Without spoilers that's about all I can say but I'm not loving it at the moment.

Completely agree with those saying that it didnt feel like a film in itself. I was settled in following the story and then out of the blue it ended.

Loved seeing more of the Wizarding World and all the bazillion references to stories we already know.

Hated the ending. Really unhappy about that.

Johnny Depp leaves me cold now, he’s not a patch on the actor (or man) he used to be.

McGonnagall - in my head canon it’s her auntie. Then the timeline/what we know about her works. I don’t think they actually said she was Minerva. Although it was very Minerva McGonnagall when she re-zipped up the students mouth Grin

Was actually pleasantly surprised by this film. I didn't enjoy the first one much - too many faffing around with magical creatures. I'd agree that this one does suffer from not being a film in its own right but it had sufficient plot to keep it moving. I like the old wizarding families and Nicholas Flamel. I'm not convinced by Eddie Redmayne - he is insipid.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would based on the reviews. There were baby Nifflers, so cute.
Hated the ending too but I cling to the thought that Grindelwald (greatly dislike that casting) might have been lying to Credence.
I think Prof MacGonegall is an aunt or Minerva's mother too.

I wasn’t really looking forward d to it, but I really enjoyed it, much more than the first.
Loved Dumbledore and newt, could watch them forever.
I guess Grindlewald was lying, but how the fuck is Credence Dumbledore’s brother? X

I don't think it will be an out and out lie I can't see it being the whole truth either.

A half brother perhaps?

Report
itswinetime · 22/11/2018 18:19

Given what we know of the time line and ages of people it would have to be a half brother from his father. But I'm expecting a bigger twist than that I hope for a bigger twist than that anyway.

Report
FantasticHarryPotter · 22/11/2018 18:26

I'm going to see it on Saturday but know the twists as live following SupercarlinBrothers.

I'm wondering if an Obscurus can go from one Obscurial to another. So when Arianas left her it transferred itself to Credence and so, 'your brother is trying to kill you' is true if we also count that it belonged to Ariana.

Its the only way it could realistically be true but not.

Report
itswinetime · 22/11/2018 18:41

Fantastic. That's my working theory. I think the whole concept of Obscurials has been brought in to further expalin Arianas story. And at the moment there seems little purpose to Credence being one unless it links to her. I doubt that is everything though at least I hope not.

Yes the first one was better but I totally loved this film.
Husband hated it but then he did fall asleep lol
It was beautiful - Paris / London / in the twenties.
And the costumes.
Special effect great - newts basemen wow!
Great story with twists and turns.
Well acted. I thought Johnny Depp was playing him just right.
The opening scene had me on the edge of my seat.
Want to see it again :)
And yes Credence in 'real life' is very Hot - check it out.

It just drag in places but like the ending! Don't see how they can make 3 more films from it though without it dragging. If that is the case.

Darker then I remember the first one being though! Poor baby!

Saw it today en famille and we all loved it! No dragging bits for us at all.

As DD15 said 'it's like one of the really good Harry Potter movies but without the dodgy child actors'.

Okay my thoughts now after actually watching it.

  1. Queening didn't go completely on her own accord. I believe something was in the tea. As she didn't care what Jacob felt and that's why she claimed she was doing it. Gribdelwald has done something to her.

  1. Mumsnet love to diagnose it but honestly pretty sure Newt is Asperger. But an amazingly cute and gentle Aspergic person. I have a friend who is equally as shy and anti confrontation but unfortunately he's into politics not Kappas.

  1. Credence is not a Dumbledore. It seems that Grindelwsld is giving him a bone to dangle with and get him to do his bidding. He said to his trusted followers earlier in the film that only Credence was powerful enough to deal with Dumbledore and then its conveniently stated he's a Dumbledore? No, I am thinking some crafty behaviour has taken place here.

  1. I think it's Depps portrayal of Grindelwalf but I actually felt that he wasn't understandable/you could see how he would justify it. I expect Grindelwald should've been seen this way, but I just see the Chessmaster/Magnificent Bastard vibe. After all he had been doing dodgy stuff in Durmstrang so clearly has been up to no good a while.

  1. I like Dumbledore. He has a very Dumbledore way about him - making jokes, talking about benign things - but with less conviction than the older Dumbledore which makes sense.

  1. Dumbledore loved Grindelwald, Grindelwald used this to his advantage.

Queenie not Queening. Down with that sort of thing 😚

@Dowser I agree about Eddie Redmayne, he does play all the characters very similar with his "cute but curious" expression. It works, but does get repetitive.

Just saw it today, I enjoyed it. But I’m I’m honest it started and I realised I’d forgotten just about all of the first film 🤭

I wasn’t that gone on Dumbledore - might be on my own there! Plus while I didn’t think Jonny Depp was bad, I do wish someoneelse had been cast.

We have seen it with DS and we loved. DS actually dressed up in his Griffindor robe. Grin

I never liked Johnny Depp, but they portrayed really well how all that beauty and magnetism Grindelwald / Depp had as a young man are gone, transformed into something more sinister.

It is very interesting that so many of you do not believe Credence is a Dumbledore. I totally believed it, but you are onto something.
If Percival Dumbledore went to prison in 1890, his secret son would not be a teenage boy in the 1920s. Kendra Dumbledore did not die on a ship, so Credence cannot be hers either.

Credence could be a Riddle or a Gaunt. DS is convinced Credence is Tom Riddle.
Or an Ariana Dumbledore / Grindelwald child. The latter would explain the confrontation between Grindelwald and Aberforth Dumbledore.

I had heard such mixed reviews that I didn't know if I would enjoy it, but I've just been to see it and I actually really did enjoy it. I love Harry potter though so it may just be that there were more hp links than the first one, but I defo enjoyed it more than the first one!

Found it really childish. Absolutely nothing had happened after 45 minutes so I left.

We haven't seen it yet. Can I ask what those who have had made of the female characters?

I thought the first film was a very healthy depiction of non-toxic male characters. And I enjoyed that for my son (as well as my daughter).

But I've heard that in this sequel it's gone too far and there's a large emphasis on the men and the female characters are very much sidelined.

Did you find this at all?

Report
MrsChollySawcutt · 06/12/2018 11:14

Interesting question.

In terms of male characters, the leads are Newt (good) and Grindelwald (bad) plus quite a bit of young Dumbeldore and key supporting roles from Credence, Newt's brother Theseus and Jacob Kowalski.

I think there is less screen time for the female characters in this film than the first. Tina and Queenie are back and they are joined by Leta Lestrange as a main character and also the mysterious Nagini.

Can't comment much more without spoilers but I will say that it follows the theme of a lot of the Harry Potter universe where good and bad are not always as you would expect.
