I haven't read the book so I suspect I'm missing loads of nuances.

Started very slow but was gripped by the end. Creepy.

The ending of the book is deliberately ambiguous. The doctor sleeps in his car the night Caroline dies so we don't have any concrete to go on.

I can't find my copy but from what I remember it is a faithful adaptation
It is. Almost word perfect. So bleakly gothic, which was exactly what the book was. I completely agree with margot. I read the book years ago and loved it and then re-read it when it was picked for a book club book a few months ago. I eagerly awaited the film but I do think you need to read the book either before or after to fully enjoy and understand the film. I’m not sure it works well stand alone, it’s so nuanced. I think Domhnall Gleeson played it perfectly, exactly how I imagined, Ruth Wilson and Will Poulter were very very good too. The only thing that could have been improved was to play up Gyp’s part a bit Smile

@LeftRightCentre

Yes, it was utterly hair raising in the book. They had Sarah's original notes on the scene at the British Library Gothic exhibition a few years ago. Exciting!

Can I ask, without spoiling the book....

Did anyone notice anything on the table in Rod's room?

Also, how did viewers of film only perceive the fire e.g. How it started etc.

I've got to go to bed but will def be back on this thread!

Haven't read the book, very much enjoyed the film. Claustrophobic and nuanced performances from all the cast.

Womaningreen, re the fire in Rodericks room, I didn't think he'd started it, given his horrendous burns (kudos to the make up/special effects department), I think he would be too scared to do so.

SouthWestmom · 30/09/2018 10:04

We thought she heard him smashing around in his car and thought it was the ghost and that's why she said 'you' when he appeared as a child.

Loki, that's interesting.

I wondered if it might appear to a new viewer that Rod started it...although the fact of several little fires is there, again, not sure I'd notice if I hadn't read the book.

Noeuf, yes, that's another theory - there have been quite a few theories from the book over the years.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 30/09/2018 19:47

noeuf, I thought the noises she heard were echoes of the noises in the car so what she saw in the house was linked to him.

SouthWestmom · 01/10/2018 06:51

Yes same here. We decided he caused everything deliberately or otherwise

Womaningreen · 01/10/2018 10:42

Noeuf, are you planning to read the book?

If anyone does read I would love another discussion about it! I can talk about that till long after the cows get home, light a pipe and and fall asleep in front of the TV.

SouthWestmom · 01/10/2018 15:34

Yes definitely - I'll tag you when I do!

Watching this now but it's just a bit boring

OohKittens · 16/02/2021 21:57

@purpleme2 what channel is it on?

purpleme12 · 16/02/2021 22:17

It's on 4od

RevolvingPivot · 21/03/2021 10:00

POSSIBLE SPOILER....

Did the doctor kill them all because he wanted the house to himself?
I'm so confused it ended so suddenly!!
