Bao- short film before Incredibles 2 😬

Today I went to see Incredibles 2 with my 5 year old and we were both really disturbed by the short film Bao beforehand. The story is about a woman who makes a Dumping that turns into a baby dumpling with a face. She nurtured and raises the dumping as her child until he is about to leave home and then she suddenly kills him by eating him! My son was horrified!!! Tonight he has had knightmares about it. Has anyone else seen it and have had a little one upset? I felt it was very inappropriate for a film which will be viewed by very young children who won’t understand the symbolism of the story only the betrayal of the mother to kill her child without warning! Interested to hear others experience and to prepare others who may be taking young kids x

What happened there?

SemperIdem · 04/08/2018 20:14

I think you’re being a bit over the top op.

My 9 year old son kind of got it and wasn’t upset, he just wanted Incredibles 2 to hurry up and start.
My 13 year old really liked it

Ohh I thought it was totally bizarre choice for a PG movie short too. The poor child behind me, maybe about 4ish, sobbed and screamed when the mother ate the bao-baby and was begging to go home. Mine are a bit older so I could explain it wasn't a real baby but really, an odd choice.

I loved it. Made me cry. I was cuddled up to my 10 year old son who is my youngest so it was very poignant. I actually think The Incredibles is aimed at older children anyway. It went completely over the heads of the really little kids in the cinema and some left before the end (and loads just talked and cried all the way through it).

Pebblesandfriends · 04/08/2018 20:24

My ds (4) gasped when she ate him and I just whispered ' it's not real baby, just pretend' and he seemed to accept this. I am now on tenterhooks waiting for the nightmares Confused

ScrambledSmegs · 04/08/2018 20:32

Oh. My kids were totally unfazed by it. 8yo loved all the cooking in it and 5yo thought the bit where she ate the bun-boy was hilarious Confused.

In fact most of the cinema full of young children thought that bit was very funny. Maybe we were surrounded by budding psychopaths, including our own?

I thought the Incredibles 2 was quite scary in parts and did wonder at all the tiny kids in the cinema and their reactions. On another side note, there was a child of about 18 months in the audience who started wailing as soon as the Incredibles started. Why do people take such young children to the cinema!! And Incredibles was PG so they were flagging up the fact that there might be little-child-disturbing scenes. If you’re child is under 5 and sensitive I would wait for the DVD to come out to be honest. The cinema can be really full-on for some kids (precisely the age/sort) that might think a child dumpling being eaten is the stuff of nightmares - Bambi anyone??

Unknowndevice · 06/08/2018 11:14

And I didn’t think much of Bao for sexist reasons. So mummy is going to teach the little (glammed-up) wife to make dumplings properly so she can take care of her little dumpling of a son (who was a total brat to boot) And do Dads not love their dumpling sons?

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 13/08/2018 16:41

Incredibles 2 had a big following from 20s adults who loved the first, more than i realised as i personally didnt find the first that great. It had a massive social media followong by them and a lot of internet coverage. With that in mind i think its ok to have Bao on before it. I also think theres a difference between something rated U or PG so that its suitable for young children and that and for that film to be designed solely for young children.

I took my 10 yr old nephew to watch this 3 weeks after giving birth.

I was crying my eyes out and he just keeps going on about how 'weird' it was, even now 3 weeks later. He has a difficult time expressing himself and usually when something is weird to him it means it upset him.

Completely inappropriate to show before a kids film.

DH and I also took our DC to the cinema today. My youngest DC with ASD was also a bit disturbed by it.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 15/08/2018 19:04

I laughed when she ate him, I thought it was quite funny and could understand the metaphor but not really something young children are going to understand.

Ymamiss · 28/08/2018 22:57

I absolutely loved it and couldn’t wait to get home to look up the animator and the story behind it (a female animator), I was with ds aged 2 and he looked up at me strangely as I sobbed, it was very emotional I thought. Magic.

I read an article about this which I'll see if I can link to from an Asian man who said how important it was to see.

Various film studios have been trying to appeal more to Chinese audiences for a while

Skyscraper is a good recent example

Actually it's not by an Asian man it references a number of posts by Asian men and women on Twitter. Remembered incorrectly.

Holidayshopping · 28/08/2018 23:16

I thought it was really weird!
