I have a very appropriate name for this thread

Just been to see this (sans children ).

Pretty long, but great fun. Actually liked it better than the 2nd. Most of the plotlines tied up, but of course, there's scope for a IV.

Complete escapist tosh - marvellous

Anyone else seen or seeing it?

OP posts:

Oh, all right then...

SPOILER WARNING - ONLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN PIRATES III BUT MISSED THE BIT AFTER THE CREDITS.... (scroll down...)

keep going...

End of credits.

Cut to clifftop with the caption "Ten years later" and shot of Elizabeth Swann being joined by a young boy aged about nine, she puts her arm around him, both smiling and waving to Will Swann who is out at sea, still aboard the Dutchman. The sun sets, green flash, ship disappears.

Then you realize that the boy is the same one who was hanged in the opening scenes and dropped the piece of eight....

BigPantsRule · 28/05/2007 14:05

Er, sorry - not Will Swann, I meant Will Turner!

suzywong · 28/05/2007 14:06

yes, yes, yes but can we get back to how hot Johnny is?

ssssssscorchin'!!!!!

BigPantsRule · 28/05/2007 14:31

Yes, that too, and another thing - despite the fact that Ms Knightly may be a size zilch, one shot towards the end of the film revealed some unexpectedly chunky legs.... (scratch!)

suzywong · 28/05/2007 14:34

yes, she has thick ankles

BigPantsRule · 28/05/2007 14:52

And fat knees

BigPantsRule · 29/05/2007 12:12

On second thoughts, I might have misinterpreted the ending. Very puzzled - can anyone who has seen it right through to the end tell me if it's the same boy? (Not a spoiler - you'll only understand what I mean if you've seen it!)

I've tried to find the actor's name in the credits but no luck.

suzywong · 29/05/2007 12:13

I can point you to a discussion board that as in excess of 50 pages on this and other points of the movie if you really really want to.

BigPantsRule · 29/05/2007 13:21

Thanks - please can you post the link?
I hate loose ends!

suedonim · 29/05/2007 13:23

It's a pile of garbage. I enjoyed every minute of it!!

I'm bemused by these reviewers who said the plot is too complicated. I'm the world's worst at following the plot but even I understood it, hehe.

As to the post script ending, we'd just left the cinema when dd said 'There's usually a bit at the end after the credits.' 'Now she tells me.' I thought. I might have to suffer watching JD all over again just to see that bit.

suzywong · 29/05/2007 13:28

are you sure
it will consume your day if not your week?

and there's an awful lot to wade through?

well then go the first link I posted earlier on, go to the home page and then to boards and there will be a thread called something like AWE discussion part 2 with spoilers

don't say I didn't warn you

BigPantsRule · 29/05/2007 15:12

Thanks for that Suzy. Had a quick look, seems I'm not the only one confused by this! Will plough through the rest when I have a spare six hours or so .

nannyogg · 30/05/2007 13:28

I'm going to see it in a couple of hours. I know it's had pants reviews but I'm going anyway so stick that in your pipe and smoke it Mark Kermode.

Is it worth waiting until the end then for this bit after the credits? I will have to convince the people I'm going with to stay to the end and will get stick if it's not worth it!

nannyogg · 31/05/2007 08:50

Well I went to see it, and I thought it was brilliant.

It certainly didn't feel too long. It was a bit tough to follow the intricacies of the plot but you get the general idea. There were some brilliant action pieces (not to give too much away, but there was one scene reminiscent of Titanic that was brilliant).

And a very satisfying ending. I stayed for the bit after the credits and have to say, Bigpants, that I don't think it was the same boy - but the flash of green light was very significant iykwim

Highly recommended, honestly.

BigPantsRule · 31/05/2007 14:25

Thanks for that Nannyogg! Glad you were looking out for it! Yes, I'm sure the green flash was significant. I wish the casting people would get their act together on films like this and not choose actors who look like one another! (Except of course for stunt scenes etc.) Unless the whole intention was to cause confusion...

suedonim · 31/05/2007 14:35

Dd2 had talked her daddy into taking her to see Pirates 3 on Saturday. Not sure I'll be going as I have a gut infection (again!) but dd's got strict instructions to watch the post credit bit.

Slubberdegullion · 03/06/2007 22:17

Agree with nannyogg. We sat through to the end (DH grumbling, why are we still here...just on the say so of MN, I hope it's worth it etc etc). I don't think it's the same lad.

I enjoyed the film. But have to agree with the Times reviewer that it was bloated. Did we really need the whole Calypso plot line....

We got an interval 'for your convienience' half way through which was much appreciated (haven't been to a film with an interval for aeons).

Orlando as yummy and smouldering as ever.

Kiera wooden and pouty as ever.

Johnny doesn't do it for me but he still carries the film.

OK & enjoyable but def. not as good as the first one.

roisin · 03/06/2007 22:22

I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected, actually. I normally love this sort of tosh

I always enjoy watching Orlando Bloom though, but prefer him as an elf.

ViciousSquirrelSpotter · 03/06/2007 22:23

pmsl at preferring OB as an elf

Yes, one you can put in your pocket

Or in your garden in a green jacket and a fishing rod... oh no that's a garden gnome isn't it

But he does look like one... like Nick Cotton...

roisin · 03/06/2007 22:27

Legolas in Lord of the Rings

ViciousSquirrelSpotter · 04/06/2007 09:35

No, he still looks a bit like Nick Cotton there

And permanently puzzled

hannahsaunt · 13/06/2007 15:43

Saw this last night and thought it was fabulous - didn't notice the time at all.

However, can anyone explain the correlation between the opening scene and the post-credit scene?

Confusion arises from ... (spoiler alert)

If it's the same small boy at the beginning and the end(and assuming he got his piece of 8 from his pirate king mum and is it one of THE pieces of 8 for the pirate captains?) how come Beckett is alive in the opening scene and instructing the hangings since it must be later than the big showdown where he dies if the boy is there? And was he (Beckett) party to the pirate knowledge that the singing of the song would initiate the meeting of the brethren? Hmmm. Must be a different child. No?

nannyogg · 14/06/2007 08:40

We've debated it hannah, and concluded that it is a different boy, for the reason you mentioned. Spoiler warning:

Can only assume that the boy at the beginning is just there to demonstrate how ruthless and heartless Beckett is..Ah well, it'll be out on DVD before we know it and then I can analyse it all over again!

Tigerschick · 14/01/2008 09:31

OK, OK, I know this thread is several months old but DH and I finally managed to get around to watching it last night!

I really enjoyed it - thought it was better than the second one. That's often the way with pre-planned trilogies tho isn't it? The first one sets the scene and is often a self-contained story in case it flops; the second one is really just laying the foundations for the last one so seems a bit something-and-nothing; the last one ties up all the loose ends and they throw in all the special effects that they didn't find a space for in the first 2!

I did think it was a bit confusing when the main characters weren't on the same ship. But the plot itself wasn't particularly complex.

IMHO ... - Spoilers incase there is anyone less up-to-date than me (not likely but you never know )
The bit after the credits was just to show that Will did come back after 10 years and that Elizabeth was waiting for him - that they didn't go down the Davy Jones/Calypso route.
The boy is not the same, the one at the beginning was just to show the ruthlessness.
Beckett did know about the singing leading to the court - when he was told they were singing he said "Finally." and he already had Davy Jones under his control.

Can't think of anything else ATM - and this is plenty long enough!

suzywong · 14/01/2008 14:12

I thought it was a bag o'shite
and I'm MARRIED to Johnny
I do tell him over breakfast that is was a mistake but he either ingnores me or just continues the night's ravishing and seems very non-plussed by my criticisms
