In the book I didn't get the bloke being beaten up for being gay and the thing with the two shirts was much more explicit and sad.

Let me feeling a bit HMMMM!

Did you like this film or think it was pants?

I thought it was weird. Heath Ledger didnt seem to be able to talk properly. It all reminded me of the sketch, think its from the Fast Show, where the landowner has a crush on Ted and Ted just mumbles and cant look him in the eye. They had the same sideburns too.

wuzzlefraggle · 17/05/2007 18:58

to be honest, i thought it was quite a good film...I'd watch it again. I saw it as a tragic love story i suppose.

see what you mean about the mumbling Kezza lol.

LoveAngel · 18/05/2007 15:33

Watching this film was a very strange experience for me. I felt really uncomforrtable throughout - I didn't feel I sympathised with the characters enough and I found it all a bit tedious (and the sex scenes disturbing)...but almost at the very end I burst into floods of tears and suddenly I really felt the emotion and the tragedy of the story. It was weird...watching a film and disliking it while you;re watching, but then coming away thinking 'that was a brilliant film'. I havent had that before.

joash · 18/05/2007 15:34

ABSOLUTE PANTS!!!!

expatinscotland · 18/05/2007 15:35

It was kack.

I'm American and I couldn't understand most of what they were saying with all the mumbling.

Boring!

Boco · 18/05/2007 15:40

I watched it with 3 straight men and it was fun to watch their reactions to the sex scenes. One suddenly found my copy of Glamour fascinating, the other two were thirsty and needed to discuss beer.

I thought it was a good film - didn't understand a word of the mumbling either.

janeite · 20/05/2007 15:21

Thought it was tosh. Dp loved it though. And I couldn't understand what they were mumbling about most of the time either.

geekgrrl · 20/05/2007 15:24

well, I loved it, I thought it was very moving, a great tragic love story, beautifully acted and great scenery. So ner!!

It was a pretty film (scenery, actors)

But shoyt. Drivel. Guff. One of the most depressing films I've ever seen.

I went home afterwards and stabbed myself in the eyes with a pickle fork to brighten my mood.

jj131 · 21/05/2007 09:50

loved it.

BibiThree · 21/05/2007 09:54

Found it a bit boring in parts, but mostly thoroughly depressing and cried. Especially at the end.

chopchopbusybusy · 21/05/2007 09:56

LOL Kezza. I thought of the sketches from the Fast Show too. Watched it on Sky + thank goodness because I did have to rewind a lot to work out what had been said. Thought it was a brilliant film though.

ipanemagirl · 22/05/2007 11:28

Loved it, very true to the original story, love this director (loved Ice Storm and the one with Ride in the title)I think he is comfortable to allow space without dialogue or action. Surely the whole point of this film is the terrible inarticulacy of the two men and their own recoiling from their love etc etc. I think it was brilliantly done and should make us uncomfortable!

sauce · 22/05/2007 11:30

I was disappointed in the film (haven't read the book. Maybe because of all the hype. At the end I felt, 'yes, fine but so what?' The photography was beautiful.

schneebly · 22/05/2007 11:32

agree with wandrering trolley - felt thoroughly depressed afterwards and for that reason would never reccomend anyone to watch it.

multitasker · 22/05/2007 11:35

Ipane - I thought it was a brilliant film and the self loathing they felt about their love was incredibly moving and did make for uncomfortable viewing - I thought that was the whole point of the film.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 22/05/2007 11:43

Left me feeling a bit 'HMMMMM' too.

Had really looked forward to seeing it, but depressed the living shit out of me. Had to listen really hard to hear what was being said most of the time. I think the subject matter was what earned it all the plaudits - I just didn't like it. Even DH didn't like it, and he likes everything.

jellybeans · 28/05/2007 13:53

I LOVED it too.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 28/05/2007 14:00

I thought it was beautiful and sad.

A real love story.

Pruuni · 04/06/2007 21:09

I absolutely loved it. I thought it was beautifully filmed, well acted and when I went back to read the short story I found Ang Lee seemed to have added almost nothing (except maybe the bit about him having been beaten to death for being gay, which was only alluded to in the film anyway) yet made a full-length film that I never found dull.
I grew up in a country area (in the highlands) and knew men like the Heath Ledger character, and it really made me wonder.
THe two shirts thing and the way he folded his daughter's sweater...

salsmum · 25/08/2007 00:25

Good film i liked it although......
A male gay friend of mine dragged me to the cinema after seeing the trailer showing the two guys jumping off a cliff buck naked he was quite dissapionted to find it was only a trailer scene and wasnt included in the actual film..............que sera sera.

Ok I loved it, even the way he spoke, it seemed more realistic and summed up the way he found it so hard to speak about his feelings and all that, lovely film to watch alone when DH wrking with a bottle of wine and a big box of tissues (for the tears ).
