Anyone want to chat about this? So clever! Amazing writing. I found the preamble a bit long. The night guard story was different than the stage show though...or is it how you remember things?

Saw the film last night and thought it was brilliant. Loved how all the little details come together and are “explained” at the end, eg the boys on the beach, the carrier bag, the numbers.... Very, very clever but genuinely disturbing. We had to watch Rhod Gilbert on the telly when we got home for some light relief Grin
I found the horrific finger in the mouth bits and subsequent realisation that this was because of his hospital feeding tube really freaked me out the most...not sure why. I’ve not seen the stage play and don’t think I’d want to now...it would make it seem too real, I think! Can’t stop thinking about it this morning.

JiminyBillyBob · 13/04/2018 17:44

HalfWoman - YES! That’s what I can’t get over either...the finger/tube thing. I honestly think it’s one of the most gripping, disturbing films I’ve ever seen. So clever and well done. As you say, all the little bits....

SpringNowPlease2018 · 13/04/2018 20:59

Interesting, my friend saw the play with me and we both thought the hospital aspect was a much bigger deal in the film. The play was more about being terrified, in person, of ghosts! So if they decide to perform the play again and stick with the original format of that, it might seem a very different experience. There was a lot of "jump out of your skin and then laugh about it" in the play. Well, there was if you weren't a scaredy cat like me Grin

But I certainly didn't feel sad after the play, just very scared. Even of my own shadow!

Was reluctant to see this after the play but glad I did was fab really loved how it was underplayed was worried the effects would be ott

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 00:24

Mercury, were you reluctant because the play was so good or because it was so scary? Grin

I'm still a bit jumpy before bed but that's memories of the play triggered by the film!

I saw this last week but I might have to see it again as some silly children sat on the front row and chatted throughout the film. Talk about killing the mood Angry

So, the ending - was he always in hospital or was he out there after the 2nd story?

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 01:02

Oh Vanilla, how annoying! No one even crunched a crisp in our cinema.

In terms of "was he always in hospital" I guess that's up to us to work out....but why would you think he was there after the second story and not the third? Sorry, I'm probably missing something really obvious.

Oh I can't wait to see this! I saw the stage show twice and jumped just as much the second time as the first! I've banged on about how good the show was to everybody for years! I hope the film is going to be good!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 11:30

Seeing the stage show twice warrants some kind of bravery award surely? Grin

OP posts:
keeppassingtheopenwindows1 · 14/04/2018 12:42

Haha it should! I hid in my scarf for much of the second show!Shock

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 12:52

Interesting that you hid in your scarf for the second show rather than the first....!

might take DH to see this tonight. And to see if I get any more clues. I love Alex Lawther and am prepping him to be my SIL!!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 17:38

Your SIL?

I bet there's lots to notice in a second view!

OP posts:
keeppassingtheopenwindows1 · 14/04/2018 18:10

It was almost worst second time around because I knew I was going to be scared! I took my heavily pregnant sister as well - probably not the best idea!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 14/04/2018 19:45

Keep, did your sister like it?

I knew I'd be scared from the publicity but then again I thought they were probably overstating it. I now feel they drastically understated it! Honestly at one point I started looking for the exit but the theatre was packed.

Someone upthread posted some MR James, I will look at that when I've recovered Grin

She loved it! She's a bit braver than me though!

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 15/04/2018 16:15

I thought it was crap! All the acting was really wooden and the casting just didn't work for me. The only really horrifying bit for me was the bit with the boys and the tunnel, mainly because it was the most likely to actually happen in real life.

The twist was unexpected (except for the face peeling bit, that was so obvious from the first moment he spoke!) and perhaps watching it again with that knowledge might make for interesting viewing? I just didn't find any of it scary, jumped once at a loud noise but the warehouse security bit was just dull, not suspenseful at all.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 15/04/2018 19:27

I thought the warehouse security would be dull if you haven't seen the play
It was done very differently in that.

Son in law!!!!!

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/04/2018 23:07

The end bothered me much more this time, but that's probably because I had spent most of the live show jumping out of my skin so I was mostly just relieved the show was over!!!

I think I spent so much of it with my hands over my eyes I missed vital storylines. I was half hoping the cinema would manage use the smell of bleach bit- that was really effective in the theatre.

I loved the film. The acting was fantastic all round, especially the actor playing Simon Rifkind.

samdaman94 · 20/05/2018 17:10

for anyone who has seen this film ---
my partner is phobic of childbirth and very anxious about seeing this film for the Martin Freeman story which, reviews state, revolves around childbirth.
can somebody please outline the content and what happens so that I can decide whether it is appropriate for her to view.
thank you

Glad to have found the thread.

I saw the theatre version of Ghost Stories at the Ambassadors Theatre recently and was looking for reviews / explanations containing spoilers.

For those of you who have seen both the theatre performance and the film, do you think it's worth seeing the film if you ha e already been to the theatre show@? or will it just detract from theatre memories.

Also - I'm now intrigued about the clues along the way, some of which I missed, some of which I picked up on. Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive review of the play with spoilers / full plot summary? I couldn't readily find one online.. A 2nd visit to the theatre would support this but cannot really justify that!
