Gremlins DVD was on sale at Tesco the other day £2.00 somthing or other, so I got it .
Having a better look at it now and it is a 15 rated film. Now this film wa out a long time ago ( 1985) and I thought my 6.5 and nearly 5 yr old might enjoy it. They enjoy DrWho and probably have seen a few scary monsters but doesn't seem to bother them.
I would have sat and watched Gremlins with them anyway but now having second thoughts.
Would you let them ?
They could sit and watch it with fruit shoot and sausage rolls if that helps

Dropside · 11/05/2007 11:52

hhhhm, i think i was 13 when it came out and it seemed pretty scary then. they kill people...

eachpeachnallyplum · 11/05/2007 11:53

My friend lets her 5yo twins watch it. they first watched it when they were 4 and love it! i still think its scary and i am 33, so am in no hurry to let my dc watch it.

CaptainUnderpants · 11/05/2007 11:56

Thanks - quick responses. I think I have forgotten what the film was like , I will not show them it and watch it myself !

Mothers instinct eh ??

Channel 5 showed this before the watershed recently, and have also shown Dirty Dancing at 6pm. Not exactly suitable for the very young to watch while mum cooks tea. Gremlins though is probably no scarier thasn Doctor Who, and lots of kids (including mine) watch that!

Cloudhopper · 11/05/2007 12:17

I wouldn't. I think it was a 12 cert but it should have been. Gory and disturbing for a 5yo IMO.

dingolimpet · 11/05/2007 12:19

I went to see gremlins at pictures, i was about 8/9, don't remember it being a 15 though

LadyOfTheFlowers · 11/05/2007 12:20

no. i think it is horrible.

CaptainUnderpants · 11/05/2007 12:23

15 on the DVD box - do they change rating for home viewing ?

I was just thinking about the bit in the microwave !

dingolimpet · 11/05/2007 12:25

I wonder why they made it a 15, I know it's a bit yukky, but i've been looking out for it for ages to show my ds6. It's definitly a classic

Dropside · 11/05/2007 12:26

yes it is a 15!

it is actually pretty violent and nasty in places - Gremlins 2 is more lightweight I think.

lemonaid · 11/05/2007 12:28

It was definitely a 15 when it came out -- there was a bit of a fuss about it because in merchandising terms they'd been pushing the toy etc. and then kids weren't allowed to see the film.

The 12 certificate didn't exist until 1989.

MrsCarrot · 11/05/2007 12:31

I don't think it should be a 15, it's not THAT horrible, but I wouldn't ley my 5 year old watch it, ds1 is 9 however and he'd think it hilarious.

MrsCarrot · 11/05/2007 12:32

LET even,

CaptainUnderpants · 11/05/2007 12:34

Nothing changes then lemonaid re merchandising - Spiderman 3 everywhere which is a PG -13 - some material may be inappropraite for children under 13 !

Gremlin in blender, gremlin in microwave, teacher (and several others) killed by gremlins, mother stalked by gremlin, mentioning that there isn't really a Santa Claus (!) -- all could lead to 15 certificate (OK, maybe not the Santa one). I do suspect that had the 12 certificate been around at the time it would have been a 12, though.

lemonaid · 11/05/2007 12:39

Mmm, but PG-13 kids can see, whereas in principle you just couldn't see Gremlins at all (although I think that was widely disregarded)

americantrish · 22/05/2007 09:29

hmmm....imo, 5 and 6.5 are a bit young for gremlins..i've not seen it in 10+ years, but i remember it being a bit gross in parts...
i think i saw it when i was 10 or 11 for the first time.

Saturn74 · 22/05/2007 09:30

It's not suitable for young children, IMO.

JodieG1 · 22/05/2007 09:39

I wouldn't let them, a 15 film is too much for a 5 and 6 year old imo.

franca70 · 22/05/2007 09:43

I think they are too young for gremlins.

ipanemagirl · 22/05/2007 09:57

No no no IMO!
That rating is still about right I think.
It's a nasty film and the kind which would give my ds nightmares

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 23/05/2007 21:54

My dad took me to see Gremlns when I was 8, we queued for ages - good old days when the queues at cinemas used to go round the block.

Eventually got inside the foyer - I was tired and went to sit down. Dad got to the front and was paying for the tickets so I skipped over and the cashier saw me and we were prompty evicted.

Dad hadn't realised it was a 15.

He took me to Littlewoods where I was allowed coke and a kitkat to make up for the disappointment, but it wasn't quite the same.
