Would you allow a 6 year old to watch IT?

Ok, hear me out...

My son arrived home from school yesterday and pretty much told me the ENTIRE plot of IT.

The Stephen King's clown horror film...

Whilst helping him into an awesome, but ridiculously awkward and not thought through swimming costume for his swimming lesson he whispered, rather sinisterly, "they all float down here".

He's still scared of the dark! But he told me a child in his class has seen the film and they were playing games in the playground themed around a 'killer clown'.

It got worse than that...

His age group is 5-6 years old.

Maybe it's just me, but are there any parents out there that think this is ok?
Am I being overprotective?

Er no way! I can't even watch horror films.

No chance is it ok. My husband made me watch it a couple of nights ago and now he's on night shift and I'm sleeping with the lights on cos I'm still thinking about it!

Totally not appropriate for that age but perhaps he sneaked down or a sibling was babysitting? Or yeah some parents are just crap

I'd be worried about what else that kid was allowed.

I've got a 6.5 year old, she can't watch nightmare before Christmas, she gets freaked out by oogie boogie.

It scared the shit out of my ballsy 15yo.

I've not seen either version and there's no way I ever will. I'm far too much of a wuss! There's no way I'd let my 6 year old watch a horror film.

I suspect older siblings have been sharing details.... my two dcs have been talking about it because people on the playground have. But they have no idea how —fucking— scary it is.

Honestly, I would have a word w teacher, I bet you are not the only parent with concerns and school may want to keep an eye...

Erm no, raise it with the school that sort of play needs to be nipped in the bud and it could be a possible safeguarding issue for the child watching adult tv. I would be wondering what else are they being exposed to.

DDs friends have all seen it at age 11. DD hasn't but is desperate to!

There's no way I'm watching the new one let alone my 5 year old.

There was a boy in my DDs class in primary that was allowed to watch 18 films when he was in KS1. He is now in a young offenders institution.
My kids have watched films a couple of years before the age rating depending on the content but the ratings are there for a reason.
I wouldn't let my 13 year old watch IT yet.

IT is tongue in cheek in places but still terrifying! No way suitable for a 6 year old! I saw the original aged about 14 and had nightmares. You aren’t being over protective at all, it’s a 15 certificate for a reason!

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s about children and clowns. Of course it’s fine for 6 year olds.

I would wonder if they had actually seen the film and not just stumbled across a trailer when going on you tube or something. Not great, obviously but these things happen. (A similar thing has happened to us with our ds- he saw a trailer for annabelle - we were horrified, have parental controls very high etc, and thankfully he absolutely loved it rather than was scared of it and now won’t stop going on about it and I’m sure other parents think we are the worst parents in the world...)!

We are very quick to tell people he hasn’t actually seen the film. I cringe to think he’s talking about it at school. I hope not!

The film didn't scare me one iota, and I know my 9 year old would love it.

But, there's huge references to sexual abuse father/daughter which concerns me more than anything!

Definitely not. My DD is yr 3 and her friend is Yr2 and has seen it. I was speaking to her mum about it and how I thought it was inappropriate and she just said that her DD had seen the trailer on YouTube and she didn't see anything wrong with them letting her watch the film...

Watched the original when I was about 8 and was petrified of grids/drains for about 5 years after!
I never watch horror movies now.

I would 100% mention this to school.

The child may not have actually seen it, but knowing enough details is worrying and the killer clown aspect is inappropriate for school playground games. Particularly so young!

Me and my brother, now both early 30s, watched it when we were kids. Both now scarred for life! Don't do it!
