Introducing DC to musicals

I love musicals. I'm currently sobbing my way through Les Miserable for the millionth time although Cosette is still really annoying

And it makes me think I really need to brainwash encourage my DDs to love musicals just as much as I do so I can have company.

But where to start them on "proper" (i.e. not Disney cartoon) musicals. I mean there's parts of Les Mis that aren't exactly suitable for a 10 year old and a 6 year old.

So, how do I start the brainwashing process. (DD1 is doing Annie with her school drama group, so that's one for my list).

I must dig out all my soundtrack CDs for the car to inflict on them...

Barnum is great too.

You said not Disney, but what about Pete’s Dragon (the original version)?
And Enchanted.

Hans Christen Andersen - I think that’s what it’s called - I watched it loads as a kid.

I second MGM musicals. I discovered them at 12 and have been obsessed ever since! Anything with Gene Jelly and/or Judy Garland. They're all gems.

Try to find That’s Entertsinment 1 and 2. It’s a 70s compilation of all the best bits of the Astaire, Kelly, Garland etc era of musicals. The clips are all introduced by the stars, and it’s fabulous!

in one of the series of the series Flash was an episode-musical where there were actors from the series Glee)))

My DS is 11 and loves anything with Fred Astair, Gene Kelly and Old blue eyes (Frank Sinatra for those who were wondering).

Last Christmas time I saw a musical. I rocked my daughter in my arms as I sat on the couch and watched it. She went to sleep halfway through it since she was too little to watch all of it and it was late at night. Her brother was next to her sleeping in his wheelchair. I’ve seen Greatest Showman and Mammia Mia 2 now. We mainly see Disney cartoon musicals but not at Christmas it’s my turn to choose the musical or film. Les Miserables is on my list of things to see at Christmas this year as well.

DD spent most of her time between age 2 and 3 watching singing in the raiesnlaàq

Blush

She's currently obsessed with Annie. But also likes Chitty and Mary poppins to. She hates cartoon musicals and only like ones without songs in like Disney's Brave and studio ghibli films. Odd child

I grew up listening to the soundtracks of musicals I probably know the words better than most nursery rhymes and listening to the music meant that when I was small I didn't really get exposed to any of the darker/ older elements of the stories. Get the soundtracks now and leave the films for later.

My DD loves all music so any musical (film not cartoon) is a winner! just aslong as theres dancing involved! (eyes shut, wiggling dancing from her :) )
Have to 'ffrwd' the speaking bits and rewind the fave tunes tho...currently 'think' from the Blues Brothers...
