TITANIC- at what age would you let your kids watch it?

I bought my DD (age 9.5) a book about the Titanic in the bookfair at school - it's one of the ones in the Scolastic 'My Story' series. She's really enjoying it, and is very gripped by the story and wanting to know more about the whole thing. The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester have got a Titanic exhibition on this summer and I'm planning to take her to that, but she really wants to watch the film too.

Does anybody know what certificate it is, and am I being silly thinking it's not suitable for a not-yet 10 year old? I'm not worried about the old steamy-windows scene, but just feel it's a bit upsetting... for all its corny Hollywood gloss, it does get under your skin rather.

Advice and a bit of sensible perspective please!!

Make mine a family sized box of Celebrations (or Miniature Heros - can never remember which ones I like the higher percentage of) and you're on. Anything with David Niven in it...

3Ps, oh no! I'm gonna have to get my back up off the wall and shake my groove thang (stand clear)!
I have to confess that I check the films on terrestrial and TCM every week and look forward to a good Bette Davis or Doris Day etc. I think there's tons of good old films availabel on DVD too, oh and don't forget Fred & Ginger and and and could go on and on..... and I think kids really love them, they're new to them don't forget! Do love all those Brit war films mentioned too.

No wonder you didn't like Kate'n'Leo, Dav. You are, actually, the real deal when it comes to filums. Dead impressed. Am inspired, and determined to get filmed-up .

(Now take that spangly boob tube off and get to bed).

Slept in me boob tube love! Too tired from doing the bump to take it off!
Pleased to hear you are going to look at all those lovely old films (watching Ziegfeld Girl at the moment).

The maritime museum in Liverpool has a good Titanic section as well. They did a talk last time I was there. And we were allowed to handle a polystyrene cup that had been to the wreck site. It demonstrated the water pressure.
