Films that show parents killed

Hello
Does anyone know of a good website that actually details if parents are killed off in films? I have found that a LOT of so called children's films have parents (usually the mother) killed, often as a central driver for the plot/hero/story.

My wife passed away last year, and I have two young boys. I am very sensitive about taking them to the cinema, and have found it hard to obtain relevant info. There are lots of sites that talk to sweating, sex, adult themes, but none that I have that explicitly tell you if a parent is killed.

Grandma wants to take the boys to Rogue One, I am trying to see if a parent/mother of the central character is killed (Star Wars has form in this).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Umran

I'd avoid anything Disney for a start!

I think you'd have to check films individually, IMDb will tell you in the guidance for parents section.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thank you (and yes, Disney is shocking), I'll try IMDB - have done before, but will look harder.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife.

Have you tried IMDB? It gives a run down of the plot of a film and generally lists anything that might be upsetting (language, injuries, violence , kissing/sex etc)

Maybe look up a film on there that you know and see what sort of depth it goes into.

X's posts there

Thanks very much - will do, you're the second person to note IMDb

Common sense media's website is really good for checking whether content is appropriate for kids.

EllieFredrickson · 04/12/2016 16:58

I'm guessing you've tried IMDb or the bbfc website ( the film classification people)? The detail about the rating will often give some 'plot spoilers' which might help.

If you want more general advice you could try emailing Kermode and Mayo Film show on 5live. They are good at DVD suggestions and often tackle these sorts of issues. Of course no guarantee you'd get on.

I know a bit how you feel. I lost a son and try to avoid films where this happens.

Hope someone has some better ideas. So sorry for your loss but your boys sound like they have a great and thoughtful dad.

Obviously not going to help for Rogue One but Wikipedia normally has the plot of a film. Written up oncevit has come out so you could try there. Rogue one will be in cinemas for a while so if she intends to go in January then you could have time to check?

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 04/12/2016 16:59

Rogue one isn't out yet is it? Not sure how easy it is to find out information about SW films before they are released as info is kept under wraps - I could be wrong though as I would be trying to avoid spoilers.

Sorry about your wife that is very sad.

Commonsense media is very good for details like this if you read the posts below the descriptions.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I have tried commonsensical media, and was a little hit and miss. I tested it on films I know the mother is killed, and it only mentioned some and very much in passing. I'd like the boys to see guardians of the galaxy, as it's more fun than most serious Marvel films. However, the mum dies of cancer at the start and its fairly harrowing in the hospital (my wife had terminal cancer), and this is glossed over.
Anyways, I digress, will check out all the sites noted, and thank you all so much again. Really, really appreciate it.

Odeon staff are very nice for the most part. Well they are where I live. They have often seen many of the films.

Worth leaving your children looking at stuff in the odeon shop / food area while you make enquiries with the staff?
