Went to see this today with teen dd and we both really enjoyed it.

However if you have a younger child especially if they're of a sensitive disposition have a good think about whether they will be ok with it or not. There are a lot of monster scenes and there were numerous small children getting carried out screaming/sobbing!

But that aside its well worth seeing.

I hadn't realised that the 12 classification for films was no more.

It's always been that was 12a in a cinema 12 for a DVD.

AndNowItsSeven · 03/10/2016 19:59

*way

ScaredAboutTheFuture · 03/10/2016 21:59

Could be worse everyone.... you could have taken your (admittedly underaged) 14yr old child to see Sausage Party ....

PikachuSayBoo · 03/10/2016 22:31

There used to be 12 ratings for films in the cinema for sure. I remember it being introduced for Batman, first ever 12 cert.

Just googled and checked, 1989. Wasn't introduced for videos for a few years after that.

Changed to 12a in 2002 at the cinema.......still taken me a while to cotton onto the fact that 12 is no longer a rating! Grin

We saw the trailer when we went to see Pete's Dragon and I thought it looked too scary.

We had had the books for ages for DD (10), thought they might be like some of the other books she loves - guess what, she couldn't read past the first chapter, that was last year and she hasn't wanted to try them again.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 04/10/2016 18:33

OMG I am laughing my head off at the thought of taking your kid to sausage party Grin

TempsPerdu · 04/10/2016 18:47

Saw it on Sunday with DP. Thought it was visually stunning - Tim Burton really is the master of all things gothic - but had way too many plot holes for my liking. Seemed rushed (too much stuff condensed into one film) and overlong at the same time. Haven't read the books, but think some things were probably lost in translation.

I would have been terrified of some parts as a child - had to close my eyes for the boy in the bed bit, and I'm 36! What with that and all the gross eyeball stuff...definitely a 12A.

confuugled1 · 04/10/2016 18:54

Never heard of the books but have caught the trailers at a couple of U or Pg films.

Was thinking of taking the DC (11 and 8) as it seemed from the ads to be pitched at that sort of age group - thinking of things like Harry Potter, Hotl Transylvania, roAld Dahl etc.

From the sound of this thread I think we'll be glossing over this one and finding something else!

iklboo · 04/10/2016 18:56

The film massively diverts from the books and not much of it in a good way. DS was more disappointed about that than upset or scared. I can see how it could be scary for a lot of children, though.

SouthWestmom · 04/10/2016 22:15

I remember trying to read the book some years ago ne I don't think it was YA at the time - I'm sure its been rebranded a bit?

ScaredAboutTheFuture · 05/10/2016 18:17

troll it was awfulBlush the F word was literally every other word. The orgy sex scenes...o.m.g.

The only saving grace is that ds has ASD and so didn't always "get" what they were implying.

NameChanger22 · 05/10/2016 18:28

I'm taking my 10 year old. We both love Tim Burton, so we can't miss this one. I will tell her she can leave if she gets too scared or upset, I'm pretty sure she'll be fine. She's seen quite a few 12s.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 05/10/2016 18:48

Namechanger- the books are lovely and fascinating. Maybe see how she gets on with those- if she's a fan of all things a bit gloomy and spooky I think she'll really like them.

The horror in this one is not your average Tim Burton caper though. I'd hate to waste the money and have to leave through a film.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 05/10/2016 18:50

scared- that is so much worse than I could have even imagined.

at least you've been excused from answering some very unsavoury questions though!!

iklboo · 05/10/2016 18:57

FIL took DNeph to see Ted. He thought it was a Pixar-esque film about a boy and his talking teddy bear. DNeph was 13 but looks older. He knew what the film was about but didn't tell FIL because he obviously wanted to see it.

They left quite early into the film....

Yoarchie · 05/10/2016 20:45

Oh crap, one of my DC accepted party invitation and the party is this film then pizza (they are year 6) It's this weekend. My DC is really still little. Should I say anything to party mum?

ScaredAboutTheFuture · 05/10/2016 21:00

Sigh.... Dh put the TED film on many years ago for the boys thinking it was about a cute fluffy bear..... We really are not adult enough to be parents 😔

SouthWestmom · 05/10/2016 22:17

I wouldn't. I'm not taking my Y7 and his mate now, having seen it. The trailer does absolutely nothing to indicate the level of fear possible

PikachuSayBoo · 05/10/2016 22:19

How come there's a trailer for the film in my OP. I didn't put it there. Very odd.

I must admit mr and teen DDs were surprised how many young kids were in the cinema for this. It was really quite scary. The monsters in particular were horrible.

Ach, bum.
I suppose I'll have to be the one to speak to her.
I don't like difficult situations Confused

Madeyemoodysmum · 08/10/2016 23:55

We went today with ds 9 and dd 11 they didn't cry or leave It is scary tho so more sensitive kids may not like it. There was 5 yr old in front and he was fine too but a agree the trailer show nothing along the lines of the content. The doll fight I found very shocking with that massive knife The monsters didn't bother them really. There was also swearing. This 12 a thing needs to be banned And the trailers need to be true to content.

Nataleejah · 09/10/2016 19:00

My 12yo and 7yo loved it. But we've watched other Tim Burton films and generally hold the attitude that there is nothing scary in CGI, make-up or prosthetics. Though myself i found the eye-party a bit unappetising.
