The BFG

I was lucky enough to tag along with a friend to see the Premiere of The BFG.
It was so magical, full of the delightful, mad quirkiness of Roald Dahl. I loved the little girl who plays Sophie too. It's quite dark at the beginning but quickly moves to the wonderful friendship between Sophie and the BFG. It's a mesmerizing adaptation of the book bringing it to life and delivering without disappointment. What a treat.

I watched it today. I was underwhelmed. It was beautiful in parts, but I found it disjointed and uninvolving. The book is far more fun. Loved Mark Rylance in it though

I've just been to see it with DD3 - I'm ashamed to say I have never read the book but DD has and said it was close to the story.

I loved it, it was magical and whimsical and funny in parts. The CGI was so good you almost forgot it was CGI and the Giants were great. BFG was very endearing, and the girl who played Sophie was brilliant.

Mark Rylance was AMAZING.
Such a beautiful and understated performance from him.

Loved it and so did DD - now she wants me to read The BFG to her.

I hated it, it was boring in parts, so much so that I completely lost interest and couldn't wait for it to finish. There seemed to be a few funny parts near the end but I was so fed up by then that I couldn't enjoy them. DH was of the same opinion, kids were fidgety through most of it but enjoyed the funny part at the end. I would have gotten up and walked out if the kids weren't with me.

I was wanting to go see this! Has anyone taken fairly young dc? What age is it aimed at?

I took my 5 year old Tinofsardines and she was captivated the whole time. We saw the 3D version which was pretty cool.

What age would you say it's suitable for? DD1 (7) really wants to see it but we'd have to take DD2 (4) with us and I'm worried she'd be scared or bored. She's fairly bloodthirsty and not easily frightened but I don't want to give her nightmares.

I don t think it's scary for a 7 yr old.

Mark Rylance was fab, as were the trolls. The little girl who played Sophie was too theatre school. It was my 15 year old who pointed it out, actually. She said 'some kids can act in films and others act like they're on stage - which just looks overdone for film'. She was spot-on.

There was me, 18yo, 12yo and 4yo and we all absolutely loved it. I thought it was just fabulous. Enjoyed every minute. I think Roald Dahl would have approved.

I agree about Sophie's stage school over-acting, that annoyed me too. I thought it was a beautiful film to watch and the BFG just as you'd imagine him but found the story disjointed and a bit slow in places.

My kids loved it. They had never seen a 3d movie. Dd was trying to reach out. I normally take theme to see the 1 pound movie. So was a treat for them

Yy to the stage acting. I know she's a child, and she was like Meryl Streep compared to some child actors (everyone in the first Harry Potter film, for example), but the loud and clear enunciation and OTT expression just jarred with Mark Rylance's understated and natural acting.

And WTF was Rafe Spall doing? An accent, I think. Northern Irish? Didn't work.

I think I'll have to watch it again, seeing so many have said it's brilliant. I might have just been in a grump and unable to enjoy it for whatever reason.

I really enjoyed this film. I think Mark Rylance was excellent. He got the character just right. It was visually beautiful - like the Quentin Blake pictures come to life.

There were a couple of children looking about 5-6 yrs at the evening showing I went to. They got quite restless after a while although it could have been it was a bit late for them. The film is fairly slow paced so would depend on the child as to what age it is suitable for. There are some scenes where Sophie is hunted by the Giants which could be scary for a sensitive child but there is nothing graphic shown.

Fantastic film. Me, dh and 9 year old dd loved it. Loved how they showed the comparative size of the BFG, so clever.

And the bits with the queen and the corgis were hilarious!

I took my four children (12,11,8,6 - all big Dahl fans) and they all adored it. My parents, who hadn't read the book loved it too. I thought Mark Rylance was wonderful and the whole film totally magical. I think perhaps it could have been a bit shorter but it captured the essence of the book really well.

Too slow paced, either dwelled on or skipped over some plot points, dodgy acting / annoying characters, evil giants not true to the book. Too dark. Didn't like it.

I felt it was very slow to begin with. A full 2 hour movie. Lots of kids struggling to sit through it. I enjoyed it but it did take a while to come together.

I took a 3 kids aged 12, 10 and 8. They all just said it was ok and can we go back to see the trolls.

I thought it was OK, but slooooooow. Kids were OK with it, not thrilled. Nicely made, and clever, but just a bit tedious really.

I thought it was ok until they returned to London to see the queen, then it was brilliant. Penelope Wilton as the queen stole the show.

I loved it except the fact the changes the ending which changes everything for me as it's always been one of my favourite book endings.

I love Mark Rylance anyway but he was perfect in this. Above my expectations.

I thought bfg was a great film. Not quite up to the original films standard in my opinion but still enjoyable.

I haven't seen it, but my dds went to watch it and said they loved it
