so who else has seen it? And what did you think?

and if you are going to put a spoiler on don't forget to put somehting on your fist line so that it cant be seen by smoeone previewing.

I loved it, thought it was excellent. One or two things - thy have they moved Hagrids house and the willow? And why have a stag at the lakeside for Harry to see but not say who it was. That would then mean nothing to people who hadn't read the book.

I thought David Thewlis was wonderful as Lupin, and love Gary Oldman in everything.

Is it scary? DH wants to take DS, aged 6 and we are worried it maybe a bit scary for him?

Freckle · 31/05/2004 18:35

I was quite surprised that they didn't explain who Padfoot, etc. were. It was so central to what happened. There is inevitably going to be loads left out because the film would be interminably long if they didn't, but I thought that was quite important. Wonder how they are going to deal with the length of book 5.

Janh · 31/05/2004 18:40

DS1 and I did a word count the other day, Freckle, and HP5 isn't nearly as long as it seems compared with HP1 - the spacing is wider (I forget the exact count but I reckon there are at least a third more words on a HP1 page) and the paper is much thicker. (Is still longer though!)

Am amazed they didn't explain Padfoot and Prongs & Co, it's essential (and very cute, I was thrilled when I found out who was who in the book).

And the state of the uniforms at Hogwarts! You can tell there is a new Dumbledore, he just isn't keeping up the standards Shirts hanging out, top buttons undone, tisk, tisk! Actually a rather good way of showing that they are growing up I thought.

They seemed to simplify the plot more in this one than in the otheres.

And I thought that Emma Thompson was wonderful as Sybil Trelawny and Dawn French was perfect as the Fat Lady. But where was Sir Whats his name?

feezy · 01/06/2004 08:10

Very disappointed - they did miss lots out. My ds 5 not scared.

baldrick · 01/06/2004 08:18

Scarey??? no unless you don't like barking dogs and things!! we all thoroughly enjoyed it, dd thought it was funny, ds had read the book and expained some things to me....also found parts of it very ethereal and somewhat moving...will definetely buy the video as soon as it comes out and am now going to read all the Harry Potter books as they are really sooo good (what a great world we really all live in).

saw it last night and loved it. Gary Oldman is wasted though. He is such a good actor and didn't have nearly enough to do but I trust he'll make up for it in the next film. Was it just my cinema or was the sound quality bad? I had no idea what the shrunken head said on the knight bus. I watched the scar but didn't see it move! The Marauder's Map was exactly right! i think the 3 kids are growing up really well. I loved the hanging out shirts. The Fat Lady was brilliant. But I was planning on allowing myself an ice-cream in the interval only there wasn't one!

fairydust · 02/07/2004 19:34

thought it was ok - not as good as the other two - but also thought it was the worst book of the lot to

Janh · 02/07/2004 21:09

oo, fairydust, go and wash your mouth out, it's my favouritest!

revolver · 03/07/2004 14:10

I'm thinking of taking my ds aged 3.5. Will it be too scary for him? He's seen the first two films on video and loved them and he also likes films with monsters and dinosaurs and these never bother him, but I'm concerned by the "contains scary scenes" footnote on the tv ad. This will also be his first trip to the cinema.

spacemonkey · 03/07/2004 14:14

I think it was far better than the first two - certainly darker and the acting from the three leads was better too. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Might be too scary for a 3.5 yr old imo.

Piffleoffagus · 03/07/2004 14:16

DS thought it was the best so far, but it is also his favourite of the books...
he said you can def tell the diff director and he thinks it was more complex, that you had to summise more for yourself as he put it...

JanZ · 03/07/2004 14:21

Md ds (3y9m) loved it - and it was his first trip to the cinema too. Wasn't scared at all (but his mum was, as usual ) - but then he LOVES Harry Potter, spiders, monsters et al.

roisin · 03/07/2004 19:00

I took ds1 (nearly 7) and a group of his friends: we all loved it. Didn't take ds2 (5), but he is a bit of a wuss - traumatised by Finding Nemo, and can only cope with HP1 on video in small doses!

We had 2 and 3 yr olds sat behind us in the cinema, and they were clearly scared at times, and mostly didn't know what was going on.

oxocube · 03/07/2004 20:21

I thought Trelawney was awful . This is my favourite of the 5 books but wasn't terribly impressed by the film TBH. Thought the plot was unclear (although I guess you wouldn't go to see the film without having read the book anyway).BUT, on positive side, I loved Lupin - he was exactly as I had imagined - the Dementors & the Knight Bus: in fact all the special effects were really good.

oxocube · 03/07/2004 20:22

Oh and Trelawney -could anyone else not understand what she was saying?
