Ths was on tv yesterday & DD (5) & a bit sensitive, really wanted to watch it but I put my foot down & said no. I think the book is really chilling (dementors eueueughghgh) although the film wasn't as much to me but I think it's just too much for a 5 year old. I'm wondering if I should let her watch stuff & make up her own mind more often but if I do & she's terrified then who's up half the night with the nightmares anyway.
Anyone else let a 5 yr old watch it?

DD (8) watched it with her Grandma (I took the opportunity to study). She wasn't bothered by it.

My DS(6) wanted to watch it and we decided not to let him, as he is quite sensitive and has been having bad dreams lately. I guess you know your child and make a judgement.

Agree with nikkie, wouldn't dream of showing it to someone else's children the same age unless i knew they'd been allowed to watch it before. I do think its very much down to the individual child.

Totally agree with Pesha on that. My DCs can understand that HP, Doctor Who etc aren't real because it's very obvious. I wouldn't let them watch something that was RL violent/sexy/sweary etc DS1 wanted to go to see Casino Royale, but I nixed it. I'll wait 'til it's out on DVD and vet it first.

Didn't let my ds watch this until fairly recently (he's 7). Think it's quite a lot scarier than the first two, particularly for the sensitive sort (it's the dementors).

DS (6.5) is allowed to watch HP1, 2, 3 - but i won't let him watch HP4 yet (the 12 as opposed to PG).

He has the stories to listen to - and similarly has listened to 1,2,3 but not yet 4.

I suspect i shall allow him to listen to HP4 soon. Then, when he has listened to it i'll let him watch it. With me and/or DH there.

Haven't read what others have said but I have a six year old who has read the book and no we wont let her watch it. Its weird but HP4 is a 12 but I think in many ways its less scarey than HP3. I think my dd would be totally freaked by it. I'd also say though that different children react differently to different situations. I know my child and therefore am happy to say that no at 6 she's definitely not up to watching HP3 yet.

nikkie · 15/01/2007 20:01

I thought HP4 was less scary than HP3 and also less scary than Narnia (also a PG).The graveyard scene is the only bit I don't let my dds watch (more on violence than scary IYSWIM)
