Are age ratings getting too lenient?

Recently I've seen a few films where I've raised my eyebrows at the age rating, Deadpool (15) being a recent example. The rules on violence and swearing are becoming a bit too relaxed in my opinion and it's becoming harder to tell how suitable a film is for your child based on age rating alone.

It baffles me that The Force Awakens and The Dark Knight can share the same rating despite being very different in tone and content. TBH I don't see a problem with TDK being a restrictive '12' (just not a 12A) but Star Wars doesn't need such a strict rating.

Are there any films you've seen that you felt were rated too leniently (or too strictly)?

I was shocked that Hunger Games are only a 12... DD nearly 11 has read all the books, and we watched the films together.
Lots of graphic violence. Def more suited to a 15 I'd have thought.

Lovelilies
There is no 12 rating at the cinema only 12a which is advisory not restrictive. I wish there was a proper 12 like the old AA in my day. 12 restrictions are only in dvds so they cant be bought in shops by under 12
Also films that were shown on tv pre sky/cable were always heavily edited even when shown late at night.

Just realise the editing still happens on tv.Was watching Skyfall one night and the scene where the villain reveals his face is edited and not as gruesome as in cinema

Pan's Labyrinth was a 15. It is a brilliant,well-made film, but some of the scenes are horrendously violent and disturbing.
