The Pursuit of HAPPYness, why

JoolsToo · 09/01/2007 18:05

is it spelt like this. 'Happy' is differentiated in the title (shown in red) but why?

Why just not 'happiness'?

Any clever bod know?

It's driving me bats (thinking of all the little kids who are going to start misspelling it!)

it's annoying me too!

sure there's an explanation but it just looks stupid and american!

peachygirl · 09/01/2007 18:12

It's a reference to the American Constitution, DH, who lectures in these sorts of things thinks it may be the way it is worded.
Will Smith also said this on fil 2007.
Sorry I can't be more comprehensive

JoolsToo · 09/01/2007 18:26

well it's a start! Thanks!

According to this review the spelling is from a mural outside the child in the film's Chinatown day-care centre .

The phrase 'pursuit of happiness' is in the American Constition.

The incorrect spelling is because of the name of the day-care centre in the film.

It is used as a play on words because the script revolves around the Will Smith character and the relationship with his son and his aim to give him a 'happy' life, hence the highlighting in the title.

So you can recommend the film, Califrau? My DD aged 10 wants me to take her to the cinema at the weekend, and I was wondering about this film. Although I think she wants to see 'It's a Boy Girl Thing.'

Tortington · 10/01/2007 10:24

i've seen it - i am your average 'feed me pulp crap' kind of film goer - and i thought it was a depressing film throughout - with a happy ending.

there were no ups and downs - it was downs all the way - with a break at the end.

i like will smith
loved MIB even MIBII

i really usually like pop pulp. but i wouldnt take a kid to see it

TeeCee · 10/01/2007 10:28

There is also another film called Happiness out already, with Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a really dark, dark comedy.

MummyPenguin · 10/01/2007 11:13

Maybe DD and I will be better off with the chick flick then.

MarsLady · 10/01/2007 11:16

There's a book called The Pursuit of Happiness and I just assumed it was to differentiate between the two.

I'm sure once I watch the film and drool over Will Smith I'll find the real reason!

Tortington · 10/01/2007 11:18

the real reason is the below

MarsLady · 10/01/2007 13:58

Thank you custy!

Tortington · 10/01/2007 13:59

yw anything for you

MarsLady · 10/01/2007 14:04

Now I have Gloria Estefan going through my head..........

Anything for you
Though youre not here
Since you said were through
It seems like years
Time keeps draggin on and on
And forevers been and gone
Still I cant figure what went wrong

Id still do anything for you
Ill play your game
You hurt me through and through
But you can have your way

I can pretend each time I see you
That I dont care and I dont need you
And though youll never see me cryin
You know inside I feel like dying
And Id do anything for you
In spite of it all
Ive learned so much from you
You made me strong
But dont you ever think that I dont love you
That for one minute I forgot you
But sometimes things dont work out right
And you just have to say goodbye

I hope you find somone to please you
Somone wholl care and never leave you
But if that someone ever hurts you
You just might need a friend to turn to

And Id do anything for you
Ill give you up
If thats what I should do
To make you happy

I can pretend each time I see you
That I dont care and I dont need you
And though inside I feel like dying
You know youll never see me crying

Dont you ever think that I dont love you
That for one minute I forgot you
But sometimes things dont work out right
And you just have to say goodbye

Tortington · 10/01/2007 14:06

Saw it last night and loved it, although it is very tense and depressing for lots of it - worth it for the ending, but maybe not for kids.

I didn't know that was Will's real son - is that right? Gorgeous, both. I cried through most of it, because of the content, but also because Will reminds me of my dad, especially with that retro moustache.

Clarinet60 · 13/01/2007 15:55

Glad you like SF califrau. WEnt there on honeymoon, amongst other times, and loved it.
What's it like actually living there?

expatinscotland · 13/01/2007 15:55

I must be the only person on this Earth who just failed to see what all the fuss is over San Francisco.

Just another, over-priced town w/decent food to me.

charliecat · 15/01/2007 22:30

Enjoyed this, although it gave me a headache because he was so nice and things were sooooo bad!

Cancerian · 22/01/2007 22:42

Wonderful film of hope and inspiration. Although a lot of the movie is quite bleak I think it reflects the reality for more people than we care to think. All the more reason for us to appreciate what we have in life more and strive for what you really want in life despite our circumstances.
