Fabulous film!! Loved every moment, and Saoirse Ronan is incredibly talented (also nice to hear her use her Irish accent).

Just thought I'd leave this here Grin

It's a lovely wee film isn't it? Smile

DorothyL · 18/03/2016 21:04

I loved it. As somebody who moved to another country I thought it showed the misery of homesickness so well.

I wanted her to stay in Ireland.

BitOfFun · 18/03/2016 23:20

Noooooo, she had a future in America! I loved it too though.

PiperChapstick · 18/03/2016 23:22

Yes she definitely belonged in America. I think she felt obliged to stay because she was such a homebird, and missed her sister and mother, but her heart was with Tony!

I saw the film before reading the book. I much prefer the film. Ellis has more power in the film and Saoirse is incredible in her acting, conveying so much in a just a glance. I'd love to see her and Tom Hiddleston together in a film there wouldn't be much need for a script they could say it all with their eyes.

Liiinoo · 30/08/2016 17:20

I read the book because Dh was raving about it and thought it was 'meh'. Felt the same way about the movie although Saoirse made it bearable.

I read a while ago that they were going to make a TV series about the NY boarding house with Julie Walters reprising her role as the landlady. That would be more up my street.

hollyisalovelyname · 10/09/2016 19:08

I thought it was great.
The horrible woman in Enniscorthy really existed. I met someone who knew her and confirmed how horrible she was!!!

JenLindleyShitMom · 10/09/2016 19:11

Oh I saw this a few weeks ago and loved it. A lovely, feel good (at the end) film. Really surprised myself by how much I liked it. Saoirse was fab in it. I couldn't understand her wanting to stay in Ireland at all so backward, and that man was not anywhere near as cute as her Italian husband!

Oh I'd love that. JW was hilarious in that role.

Stevefromstevenage · 10/09/2016 19:13

I wouldn't not leave Domhnall Gleeson for all America has to offer. I would have stayed in Ireland

MadisonAvenue · 10/09/2016 19:18

I rarely watch films but was totally engrossed when I watched this, I loved it!
I was going to mention the TV series, I hope it happens.

And yes, she had to be in America!

hollyisalovelyname · 11/09/2016 09:22

I think it was based on the author's aunt.

TheStorySoFar · 06/05/2017 21:48

Is Brooklyn ok for a 9yo & 11yo? Know it's rated 13, haven't seen it myself.

superoz · 06/05/2017 22:38

There is one part where Saiorse Ronan's character loses her virginity, so that's why it has a 12A rating.
It is the only bit in the film which stands out as being 'adult' content, but it is sexual.
Otherwise it is a wonderful piece of storytelling.

CreamCheez · 06/05/2017 22:41

Watched it at the cinema with Mum. We both cried as she said it really reminded her of when I left home for London. Such a great movie!

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/03/2018 22:26

It was a novel, though, not a true life story.

hollyisalovelyname · 19/03/2018 09:08

The author is from Enniscorthy, and apparently the novel was based, perhaps loosely, on his aunt's life.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 19/03/2018 11:21

Oh sorry, I didn't realise!

Honeybooboo123 · 19/03/2018 23:57

Sod america, I'd have committed bigamy and shagged Domhnall Gleeson

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/03/2018 11:29

Yep I was willing her to get with Jim. Just didn’t feel the chemistry with the American guy. Lovely film all the same.

Clawdy · 01/04/2018 20:09

I read an interview with the writer Colm Toibin this week, and he said he loved the happier ending written by Nick Hornby, but in his book she is returning to a loveless marriage. I much preferred Tony to the Irish guy, though.

purpleme12 · 14/09/2022 23:49

I really enjoyed it

Deadringer · 14/09/2022 23:59

I preferred the movie to the book, somehow Ronan managed to breathe some life into a very dull character. I never really got a feel for Eilis, she was so passive, she never made a decision for herself. She went to America because she was told to, studied bookkeeping because someone said she should, married Tony because he asked her to, returned to the states because people said she should. She just wasn't very interesting, but her sister Rose was fabulous, I would have loved to read more about her.
