Star With less than a month to go before the release of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, MNHQ are brimming with excitement! ^^

To tide us all over until the film's out on 18 December we’d like you to share your Star Wars best and worst bits, whether they're scenes or lines from the films or from your own experience of watching the movies – just what is it about the epic saga that you or your family love?

My husband and I went on our first date (summer 1999) to see the first of the newest Star Wars films.
I completely embarrassed home by shouting out in the parliament meeting scene with all the different nations "There's E.T!" My brother had told me to watch out for that part and I got a bit over excited!

I don't like Ewan McGregor pretending to be Alec Guiness either. Not even in the same league...

MadeMan · 20/11/2015 23:23

"Han Solo. Everything about him. I was sixteen - my hormones didn't stand a chance."

Han Solo is the reason why snooker players started wearing waistcoats; women love a guy in a waistcoat!

It's what's in the waistcoat that counts, MadeMan Wink.

MadeMan · 21/11/2015 12:53

Square piece of chalk, probably.

Han's always chalking his blaster in Empire Strikes Back.

4, 5, 2, 3, 6 is also a good order. Skips the Phantom Menace, as it's horrible and unnecessary for the plot. Keeps the big reveal of Darth Vader as Luke's father, and then flashes back to show how Anakin became Vader. Then forwards again for the ending.

Did this recently and I thought it worked well as an ordering.

And of course you want the despecialised editions of the originals, without any of the awful changes.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 22/11/2015 11:28

'You're all clear kid, now let's blow this thing and go home!' Would be my best bit, or one of them.

The prequels were tosh.

Favourite watching memory was watching all 3 of the originals at Bradford IMAX in a marathon. But I am a geek with Star Wars.

I concur with many on this thread that the prequels were horrible. The story of how Darth Vader became who he was should have been brilliant but the Mills and Boon schmaltz (dear lord the script! Who speaks like that?!) made it unintentionally humorous.

The first three were brilliant. Even ROTJ which had teddy bears defeating the military might of the Empire?!
Recently discovered that ROTJ was meant to feature wookie home planet Kashyyk, with Han Solo dying in battle instead of Endor but Lucas vetoed it in favour of being able to sell more teddies.

Empire strikes back was and is my favourite movie. It's darker and the characters are fleshed out more. They're vulnerable and on the run, their characters are tested constantly. Plus Boba Fett!

And until I watched Spaced I thought I was the only one who hated The Phantom Menace....that was a good day. Thank you Edgar Wright and Tim Bisley!

HesterShaw · 22/11/2015 15:26

Everyone hates the Phantom Menace! I went to see it on a hot date*. The cinema was full of kids who were clearly really bored. Star Wars should not be boring.

  • didn't last unsurprisingly

ROTJ is my fave.
I was 10 when it came out.
Luke skywalker was my first love and my ds1s middle name is luke Grin
My beloved late dad took me to see phantom menace and I am taking ds1 in December to see the force awakens.
The force goes on!! Smile

MadeMan · 23/11/2015 23:06

I like Return of the Jedi too (well I did before Lucas ballsed up the ending and put Hayden in the Jedi team lineup at the end.)

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 24/11/2015 21:29

Actually, i said that the prequels were awful, and oh man, they stank, but worse than that was Lucas changing the originals.
WTAF was that about? Why mess with it? We loved them as they were, you pillock!

And Han definitely shot first FFS.

MadeMan · 24/11/2015 21:48

Yeah Lucas you wally, Han is supposed to be a ruthless selfish bounty hunter who is only interested in the money. He's not some politically correct space cowboy, so of course he would shoot a rival first in his dog eat dog world.

Lucas also ballsed up the scene in Star Wars where Han and Chewie chase after the Stormtroopers on the Death Star and run into a dead end. The original had just the troopers they were chasing turn round, but now there's about a million of them and it looks ridiculous.

Destinysdaughter · 16/12/2015 08:18

Ooh I loved Star Wars! Saw it 7 times at the cinema and was a member of the Star Wars fan club! Xmas Blush

Was only 11 tho. I still cry at the end when little R2D2 shuffles onto the stage ( what a hero!). And Hans Solo was soooo sexy!

The prequels were unbelievably bad. So boring and...busy. The reviews for the new one are pretty good so contemplating going to see it today. Best to not have high expectations tho...

Destinysdaughter · 16/12/2015 08:23

Also loved this song! Can you feel the force? Xmas Smile

I have been seeking spoilers for the new film, surprisingly hard to find! It's as though Disney is doing some kind of jedi mind trick to the internet. Did find a plot summary that seems right: I like anticipation but not surprises!

Seeing it at the weekend. DH wants it all to be a surprise.
