Films that were over looked but are really good?

We have just watched Nim's Island and it was really good, but i don't remember seeing any hype or even noticing when it was released. It has made me wonder what other great films we might have missed from the last ten years or so, or just over looked them? Any suggestions?

Alice in Wonderland but the 1999 live action one, this is an absolute favourite in our house and is on practically every other day!! Alice in Wonderland is one of my favourites anyway but this version I just adore particularly the long list of stars (Gene Wilder, Whoopi Goldberg, Miranda Richardson) and is just different from the Disney one

Ooo thank you, didn't know about that. We also like Shorts, which nobody ever seems to have heard of.

2 old ones that my kids loved are

\link{http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/\a Christmas Story}

and

\link{http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0101435/\Bernard and the Genie} (though there is a bit of rudery in that. DS1, who is 27, met Lenny Henry in the restaurant where he works quite recently, & mentioned loving this film - Lenny said he thought it wasn't entirely appropriate for young children Grin)

Battleship.

I thought it was going to be utter dross but I bloody love it in all its absolutly fantastic cheesiness (cheesyness? 🤔)

bigfam · 22/12/2015 20:14

Chappie. It's just been added to sky movies, absolutely loved it!

srslylikeomg · 22/12/2015 20:14

Master and Commander

tuilamum · 22/12/2015 20:20

Stick It, has the girl out of Rookie Blue in it and is a great film for teenage girls (I only discovered it last year)

BBC wind in the willows - the one with Vanessa Redgrave.

Bambambini · 22/12/2015 20:27

Imitation Game
Grand Hotel Budapest
Fish Tank

Really enjoyed all if them.

Bambambini · 22/12/2015 20:30

Oh, and just saw Byzantine and lived it.

Also a little brittish movie How I Live Now.

NapoleonsNose · 22/12/2015 20:33

We love the Alice in Wonderland film Harvey. Now thinking about it has got me singing...'will she, won't she join the dance'! It used to be DD's, now 18, absolute favourite film. Bought it on DVD in Poundland not so long ago to replace our long lost recorded off the TV video tape.

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/12/2015 20:36

Wag The Dog.

FadedRed · 23/12/2015 14:37

Excellent recent one is Bridge Of Spies with Tom Hanks. Set in the Cold War and based on a true story.

BeccaMumsnet · 23/12/2015 14:42

I always thought 50/50 was quite overlooked but it's a really lovely film.
And yes to Grand Hotel Budapest. Really great film.

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 23/12/2015 14:43

Master and Commander. My favourite film but so many people I speak to haven't even heard of it. It seemed to just pass people by.

thunderbird69 · 23/12/2015 14:46

Big Nothing.
I don't think it is very well known but is good. Not child-friendly though!

ThomasRichard · 23/12/2015 14:51

Untouchable - subtitled French film. It's very, very funny and even my STBEXH, who was appalled at the thought of going to see a forrin' film, loved it.

SteveBrucesNose · 23/12/2015 14:54

I love Arlington Road. My usual choice of film is something easy watching, often Pixar or similar. But for some reason I love that film

VulcanWoman · 23/12/2015 15:04

Well, Shawshank Redemption, didn't here anything at the time it was released.
I liked Nim's Island too, lovely film.
Have you seen Whale Rider or Rabbit Proof Fence.
Intersellar, fantastic!
Tuesdays with Morrie, you'll need huge box of tissues though.

GladysTheGolem · 23/12/2015 15:07

Stranger than Fiction.
It's a really good Will Ferrell/Emma Thompson film about a guy who wakes up to find his life being narrated (in his head) by an author...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waitress_(film)

Waitress - brilliant film

EllaMenoPea · 23/12/2015 15:33

Chef. Had only heard of it when I saw it on Netflix and it's wonderful!

Bananalanacake · 23/12/2015 15:35

The Cook , the Thief his wife and her Lover - really appealed to my macabre side.

thunderbird69 · 23/12/2015 16:56

Married to the Mob

Love that film. (a lot older than 10 years though!)

LucyMouse · 23/12/2015 18:33

I agree with Thomas - Untouchable is my favourite film.
