Halloween movie suggestions for 11yo and 9yo?

I'm looking for a good Halloween movie for my two boys. They're usually ok with a 12A, though I always check out the detail on the IMDB Parents' Guide first.

I don't want them getting nightmares, so perhaps something with a few shocks and a happy ending would work best, rather than something really sinister.

Most of the well known horror films seem to be 15+. The Woman in Black is 12A but I've seen that and I think it's pretty sinister. My eldest has already seen Coraline, which is a PG, but I'd rather get something they haven't seen.

Any ideas?

I was wondering about this too. Boys same age as yours. Woman in Black - definitely noooooo!

I think you need something with dark humour . Something like the Addams family. They are still young.

DoublePoints · 26/10/2015 18:02

Monster House? It's a cartoon but DS enjoyed it at that age.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2015 18:04

We've enjoyed all the special Halloween "shorts" like the Shrek ones.

I think a real horror movie is still a no-no at this age.

AllOfTheCoffee · 26/10/2015 18:05

Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloweeen Town, Hocus Pocus, I'm sure Disney Buddies has a halloween version too.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2015 18:08

Labyrinth?

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 26/10/2015 18:09

Gremlins?

ISaySteadyOn · 26/10/2015 18:11

I second The Addams Family.

Paddypaws3 · 26/10/2015 18:12

Ghost Busters?

cruikshank · 26/10/2015 18:13

Carry on Screaming? I loved that when I was a kid and introduced the dc to it when it was on telly a while back. Cracking film. And it's a PG.

ruthsmumkath · 26/10/2015 18:14

Seconding Monster House - loved by my 11, 7 year old and 5 year old.

FuzzyWizard · 26/10/2015 18:14

The mummy? Ghost busters?

MegBusset · 26/10/2015 18:14

The Nightmare Before Christmas, deffo

SquadGoals · 26/10/2015 18:16

Edward Scissorhands? 25th anniversary this year.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/10/2015 18:18

Frankenweenie went down well at that age.

YoniMitchell · 26/10/2015 18:20

The Goonies?

Thefuckinggrinch · 26/10/2015 18:20

Mine love Hotel Transylvania even my uber sensitive dd!

TrionicLettuce · 26/10/2015 18:21

Paranorman? It's a PG made by the same studio as Coraline, it's really good.

9? Ink? They are both rated 12, not sure if they'd be too scary for a 9yo.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/10/2015 18:41

Nightmare Before Christmas
The Simpsons TreeHouse of Horror (there are lots, I like the one with Hugo)
Hallowe'en episodes of The Big Bang Theory

wotafaff · 26/10/2015 19:22

Fab suggestions - thanks. Will get Monster House and keep the other ideas in my back pocket for next time!

Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, Coraline, Paranorman

From more serious films maybe Pan's Labyrinth, The Sixth Sense, or Let Me In -- but you may find them a bit too bloody.

ShammyDavis · 26/10/2015 19:24

Mine still love Spookley the square pumpkin, but then so do I. Maybe one to lighten the mood after the more scarey one.

SelfRaisingFlour · 26/10/2015 20:08

My sons like Ghostbusters and the Men in Black films.

scatterthenuns · 26/10/2015 20:13

Caspar!

scatterthenuns · 26/10/2015 20:14

Also - isn't it a bit weird to watch Nightmare Before Christmas at Halloween? Most of it is set in Christmas land - so it feels like a December film to me!

morecoffeethanhuman · 26/10/2015 20:35

My DD1 and I just watched the goonies, shes 7. She loved it (she has fabulous taste)
I also second Adams family, nightmare before Christmas & hocus pocus as well b re-watching them this week Grin
