We haven't bought a new movie in ages. Heading off for half-term next week and would like to buy a new dvd to take with us. Have ds11 and dd8. Any recommendations?

TIA

Does it have to be a recent release? Have you seen Legend of the Guardians?

It is a huge favourite here and could suit both (DD loved it at 8), there is a series of 15 books too (we had to get them from relatives in the US), watching the film led to DD reading the books.

roundaboutthetown, I love it! Love your choices too! I think every child should see Scrooged coming up to Christmas, another of my favourites growing up! Or anything with Bill Murray really!

Inside Out is an amazing film. It made me cry and my DS 7 (an emotional little soul) adored it

MrsMolesworth · 23/10/2015 17:47

If they didn't already grow up with them, Shrek, Toy Story, Monsters Inc are all brilliant.

An absolute favourite in our house is Uncle Buck, the slightly inappropriate bits go over DD2 (7) s head.
All the Back to the Futures too.

Isthiscorrect · 23/10/2015 19:30

Home alone. Goonies, ghostbusters, back to the future, cool runnings, Indiana Jones. We love them all.

TurnOffTheTv · 23/10/2015 19:37

Planes, trains and automobiles is hilarious but not suitable for kids!

WiryElevator · 23/10/2015 23:52

My DD's (9) fave are The Addams Family. She's watched both films many times, and all the old episodes on YouTube Halloween Grin

DD is only 3 so some of these are a bit too old. Will try Shaun the Sheep though! We tried Hotel Transylvania and Legends of Guardians, but DD said they were a little scary, so we switched it off.

DD loved Ponyo and My Neighbour Tortoro, both of these films are enjoyable for adults as well as children, Kiki's Delivery Service too. I love Studio Ghibli films. Surprisingly, I also really enjoyed the Tinker Bell films, I thought they would be horrible.

I love all the old films - Cinderella, Peter Pan, The BFG - you know all the ones that are being remade! I think recent kids films are way to grown up for little ones. I took my cousin to see The Lego Movie when it came out and spent most of the time explaining the references to him. He was eight at the time.

I have Amazon Prime - loads and loads of kids films and tv on there. It's £79 a year but even if you watched one film/episode a week it works out to £1.50 or something. (That price includes Next Day delivery, kindle extras and sharing the benefits with another member in the family.)

Forgot to mention that the Fire Stick can be transported into any TV with an HDMI slot - all you need is wifi.

Ones my 12 and 8 year old both love (so nearly exact ages as yours) are:

  • Paddington (brilliant, definitely see this one)
  • Despicable Me 1 and 2
  • Monsters Inc
  • Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs
  • E.T
DontStopBelievin · 26/10/2015 00:27

I like inflicting films from my youth on the kids - eg Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones.

I do that too! They're both huge Back To The Future fans as a result. We can spend ages quoting Back To The Future to each other. I'm so proud. Grin

Home Alone. My DC's love them.

Iv 2 young children aged 2 and 3 and last Saturday we were having a movie night and I decided I'd put on my childhood favourite hocus pocus and I have to say my 3yr old enjoyed it...just a suggestion ????:-)

ilovevenice · 28/10/2015 09:45

Talking of oldies, the Princess Bride went down a storm with our 8 yo DS. And Mary Poppins/Bedknobs and Broomsticks with the younger ones. Have the last 30 years actually happened?!
