I really want to see this. The book is one that has stayed with me. I read it three years ago and I still think about it from time to time. The situation and how I would react and survive etc.

Brie Larson is cast as Ma. I love her. She was in Short Term 12 and the series United State's of Tara.

So, yeah... I saw the trailer on youtube earlier and thought I would share on here because I found out about the book on MN. I can't remember if it was just on a thread or if it was a book club book, but I thought other Mnetters that read it might like to hear this.

It is being released in the US in October I think, but can't find a UK release date yet. :(

Thanks! It's a great book, I'll keep an eye out.

AnthonyPandy · 01/09/2015 18:39

Well they have pretty much given away the plot with that trailer, haven't they?

And I read the book and thought the woman was black Confused

Does it say in the book she is black or did I just assume that?

JustinsBrother · 01/09/2015 18:40

I don't think it says she's black. I never imagined her to be black when I read it, and like OP, yes, this is a book that has stayed with me.

JeffsanArsehole · 01/09/2015 18:41

I never got past the first page, just the dullest premise.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/09/2015 18:44

I really liked the first half of the book, was a bit unsure about the second, then reread it and hated the second half and found it ridiculous.

sliceofsoup · 01/09/2015 18:50

I don't think it says shes black, I didn't imagine her black anyway.

Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay herself.

I am intrigued (and horrified) with RL stories like this. The girls in Cleveland, Jaycee Lee Dugard etc. So maybe that is why the book interested me.

Well I was going to say it wouldn't be as haunting as the book but I'm in years at the trailer so I'll hold reservations until I've seen it fully.
I haven't read the book since it first came out and think it would break me to read it now I'm a mum but its a bloody good book.
I thought it was a little boy though not girl- I thought the mum was white though dont remember why but the actress looks how I would have pictured the mum to look.

sliceofsoup · 01/09/2015 19:11

It is a boy in the book AND in the film. I thought it was a girl in the trailer too, but its just the long hair.

Wishful80smontage · 01/09/2015 19:15

Slaps own hands I normally get so mad when people assume dd is a boy because she wears a lot of blue and then I make an assumption on hair!
Anyway it looks really good will be interesting to see who they cast as Ma's family that dynamic was interesting in the book.

sliceofsoup · 01/09/2015 19:18

Joan Allen is in the credits, so maybe her?

I don't remember much about the family. I think I might re read the book actually.

UK release date 29 Jan 2016 according to IMDB Grin

I loved this book when I read it, got very absorbed.

sliceofsoup · 01/09/2015 19:47

Ooh thanks Thursday.

Ooh, this book has haunted me, so I will stay away from the movie - I never find them as good, and actually I don't think I really want this laid out on a screen for me.
I will probably watch it actually!

MazzleDazzle · 20/09/2015 20:58

I'll look forward to that. I enjoyed the book, but understand why others don't. It was rather predictable.

Bought her recent one, 'Frog Music', but I just can't get into it.

Anyone else read it?

bigTillyMint · 21/09/2015 15:01

Loved the book but the trailer is crap - gives the plot away Angry

Flambola · 23/10/2015 06:02

I read that the director didn't want the film and the focus to be about the kidnapper or the abduction hence giving away the fact in the trailers that they escape the room, if that's what you're all talking about with regards to the plot?

I've not read the book.
