What is the most haunting *film* you have ever watched?

Blatantly stealing the idea from the haunting book thread!

Mine has got to be 'Dreams of a Life', the film about Joyce Vincent, the lady who died in her flat and wasn't discovered for years. It just breaks my heart that she lay there for so long. And the thing that haunts me the most is the fact that her TV was still on. Sad

Another one is 'As Above, So Below' a mediocre 'found footage' film set in the Paris catacombs, although it isn't a brilliant film, it really unnerved me.

I think the film that affected me the most and has really stayed with me was We Need To Talk About Kevin. I dreamt about it for weeks afterwards and it made me have serious second thoughts about wanting children.

southeastastra · 25/07/2015 21:36

dreams of a life was upsetting :(

I suppose i would call picnic at hanging rock quite haunting

Motherinlawsdung · 25/07/2015 21:38

Sophie's Choice, when she chooses - heartbreaking.

Madbengalmum · 25/07/2015 21:42

Yes, Hostel really got to me, because it could definately happen.

Rubylee87 · 25/07/2015 21:43

The Hills Have Eyes

Lilya 4 Ever

Rosemary's Baby

And not a film, but I remember watching a music video when I was about 11 (so 1999/2000) where a man was walking around a busy town and his feet started crumbling. Really disturbed me! Think it was by aphex twin or someone like that but I've never seen it since.

quirkychick · 25/07/2015 21:53

Sophie's Choice, I don't think I could possibly watch it now I have dcs.

The Wickerman, I've seen it quite a few times but the end is still terrifying!

Requiem for a Dream, so bleak.

Probably quite a few more...

WallyBantersJunkBox · 25/07/2015 21:53

God all Aphex Twin videos are horrifying. Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/07/2015 22:00

A Serbian Film, really really vile and just the thought of it makes me feel nauseous. And I'm not bothered easily, certainly not by stuff like Hostel, Saw etc but this was just horrific.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/07/2015 22:10

I agree with Sophie's choice. Completely heartbreaking and impossible to forget.

UncertainSmile · 25/07/2015 22:13

Come and See

MetallicBeige · 25/07/2015 22:20

Philomena - it reduced me to sobs, the fact it was so relatively recent and all true. Absolutely heartbreaking.

BobandKate0 · 25/07/2015 22:33

Onibaba - if its the one i recall, where two japanese peasants are stealing stuff and sit in a little hut eating their ill gotten gains.
From Beyond the grave - the bit where david warner steps forward at the end.

dreamingofblueskies · 25/07/2015 22:38

Heisenberg yes, that's Watcher in the Woods. I remember watching it with my older sister when we were little, she was terrified by it, I wasn't bothered.
I showed my oldest DS it when he was 10 and he cried! Felt absolutely like the worst parent in the world! Blush

Schindler's list absolutely destroyed my DH, he'd never seen it until last year with me and I know it affected him.

The hills have eyes.
A film called 'Salo or 120 days of Sodom' sick ex bf was watching it and I had to leave. It still makes me feel sick.
'penance' . horrific and weird.

Whiskwarrior · 26/07/2015 01:36

Eden Lake sprang to mind immediately.

So grim and could very, very easily happenin this country. Me and ex just sat there for ages afterwards, agog. When it ended we genuinely waited for a happy ending. No. Awful and disturbing.

So many others on this thread that I can't spend time thinking about because I won't sleep!

Idontseeanydragons · 26/07/2015 01:38

I watched Schindler's List in the cinema with, as it turned out, a group outing from the local synagogue. Part of my family have Jewish roots so I was in bits anyway but the lights went up and I found myself looking at haunted faces around me and total silence.
That stayed with me and if it's on TV it's one of the things I remember. Just the silence of the other people in the cinema.

HelenaDove · 26/07/2015 01:48

Agree with Emma about the TV film version of The Woman in Black DB STILL has it on videotape from Christmas Eve 1989 (we had to go to midnight mass)
Haunted..... (Kate Beckinsale and Aiden Quinn)

As for creepy i have a phobia of snakes and watching a film called Venom as a child (the one with Sarah Miles star of Ryans Daughter in it) did NOT help when i watched it at 9/10 years old There wasnt always a TV watershed.

Come to think of it I found Ryans Daughter quite haunting and sad.

bedelia · 26/07/2015 01:48

Just watched Hush on Film 4. Really creeped me out, not least because it's based up in the North, with many landmarks I recognised.

Cruikshank - I'd love some more Korean reconsiderations too Smile Have also watched A Tale of Two Sisters (which gave me nightmares!) but would love to watch more!

HelenaDove · 26/07/2015 01:50

Also Picnic at Hanging Rock.

I have Philomena on DVD but havent watched it yet.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/07/2015 01:56

Much more mainstream than most films on this list but:

The Others (?) - the one with Nicole Kidman in a haunted house with her 2 or 3 children

Sixth Sense - I am such a lightweight Grin

The first half hour of Saving Private Ryan will never leave me.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/07/2015 01:57

Philomena was extremely moving indeed.

SoleBizzzz · 26/07/2015 02:06

Megan in The Exorcist when she levitated.

Years ago I watched a drama with Miranda Richardson who played a paedophile. It was a true story and fucked my mind up.

HelenaDove · 26/07/2015 02:14

For those of you who are watching Humans on Channel 4......the paternal type relationship between William Hurts character and the young male synth is SOOOOO like this film I havent seen it since the 80s (it was made in 1983) but the relationship between Christopher Plummer and the young male android is similar and very touching too.
