Old movies kids will love

I realised this morning that I have been neglecting my children's cultural education . Too many 21st-century cartoons are rotting their brains and I need to save them before it's too late! So I've started to put together a list of classic movies that I think they'll love. None of these are movies specifically designed for kids, but I think they'll enjoy them. Does anyone have any other suggestions? My son is eight and my daughter is six, so I've avoided some of my favourite old movies that I think might go over their heads, because I don't want to put them off black and white films before we've even started!
Bringing Up Baby
Meet Me in St Louis
Any Marx Brothers movie
Any Fred and Ginger movie
Harvey
My Fair Lady
Some Like It Hot
Titfield Thunderbolt
Sound of Music
Lavender Hill Mob
Singin' in the Rain

its not that old but dd (nearly 5) loves 'who framed roger rabbit'

JanH · 22/11/2006 22:58

Otis and Milo, anyone?

JanH · 22/11/2006 23:00

Oops, it's Milo and Otis!!

Marina · 23/11/2006 10:13

Ds adored Little Shop of Horrors bink - I take it you do mean the musical with Rick Moranis Steve Martin and not the Roger Corman original
No one has mentioned the Lassie films yet...or dare I even type Deanna Durbin...

foxinsocks · 23/11/2006 10:15

Oh yes, the old Pink Panther ones are great (JackieNo, my dd(6) also loved the one on last weekend)

Mine are also big fans of the older James Bond films.

Marina · 23/11/2006 10:21

Miracle on 34th Street - very seasonal
Kiss Me Kate (visions of a lot of small girls singing, I HATE MEN with real vigour)
The Railway Children
Ingmar Bergman's The Magic Flute (definitely the only Bergman film likely to appear on this list!)

and more recently ds and dd both loved Agniezska Holland's film of The Secret Garden and Hayao Miyazake's Howl's Moving Castle

The Princess Bride and the imbecilic Johnny English have both been adored in our house too

Marina · 23/11/2006 10:23

The original Herbie films

Can I put in a word for another brilliant recent children's cartoon - The Iron Giant. Highly recommended - and watchable by adults too.

JackieNo · 23/11/2006 10:24

good thought, Marina. Have to say, I love the Herbie films as well as the old Pink Panther ones.

Laurel and Hardy good also especially if your children like that sort of humour

the david lean great expectations (star studded cast) is FANTASTIC.
the (admitedly contemporary) japanese animations by studio ghible (my neighbour totoro etc) are great and v different from western cartoons.

JanH · 23/11/2006 10:27

Marina, there is a touring theatre production of the Iron Man around atm, had you heard about it? Schedule

Marina · 23/11/2006 10:29

Thanks Janh for that, I hadn't. It looks great. Jacksons Lane a bit of a haul for us though especiall dd on the tube

foxinsocks · 23/11/2006 10:29

in fact (wracks brain) wasn't there some feature on this in one of the Sundays this weekend (think it had a list of real films that children should see)?

I think it might be because there's a children's film festival coming up

foxinsocks · 23/11/2006 10:30

ah, here we are

london children's film festival at the barbican

some interesting films on offer

JanH · 23/11/2006 10:33

Are you N or S London, Marina? It's on in Hatfield (U of Herts) in early December, would that be just as hard to get to?

NotAnOtter · 23/11/2006 10:34

oliver the musical

JanH · 23/11/2006 10:35

NAO, that is spooky, I was just coming back to suggest Oliver!

Marina · 23/11/2006 10:36

S London Janh, but by the time we have piddled about on the Northern Line Hatfield might be almost as easy
Thanks for the link FIS. I think a Children's Film Festival is a great idea.

foxinsocks · 23/11/2006 10:38

yes, it looks good - a shame mine aren't 12+ because the film-making workshop looks amazing

(it's not only at the barbican - seems as though it is on at quite a few independent cinemas and cineworlds in case people didn't click because it was only on at the barbican)

Bink · 23/11/2006 10:51

Yes indeed, the musical.

Have you seen it's being done at the Menior Choc place this Xmas ? Ds and dd desperately keen (but ds slightly worried - "but what if it's on the same day as Dick Whittington?")

Bink · 23/11/2006 10:51

(That was to marina btw)
