It's lovely!

Saw it well over a year ago, but here is what my old brain cal recall.

'It' is vaguely scary when you first see him, because he is quite grumpy.

There are a few moments that a 3 year old might not like - the children get told off when they go to town; the cousin is a bully, but gets his comeuppance.

There is also a scene where the cousin tries to experiment on 'It' in the cellar/laboratory.

So, great film, but would have cushion or other distraction lined up for the tiny one!

We watched it with a nervous 6 year old, but I appreciate there is a big difference between 3 and 6.

HTH.

Ta humph

are these moments visually scary? or just kind of scary if you understand whats going on?

(experiementing in the basement? I don't remember that!)

God its so hard to find films for 3 yos that aren't Disney cartoons. (I WILL NOT do Disney. EVER. I frigging hate it. Except Pixar)

Haven't seen 5 Children and It, but whatever you do don't let him watch Nanny McPhee it is terrifying and quite horrible. Ditto A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Actually it annoys me quite a lot that most films aimed at children are wholly unsuitable for them.

How about 'Swallows and Amazons', 'Shiloh', 'Matilda', 'Pinocchio' (live action version with Dawn French) and 'Babe'?

(Basement scene is visually scary iirc, dark, music suggesting impending doom etc! )

Greensleeves · 11/11/2006 10:03

Ah, maybe it's me, but I wouldn't let a small child anywhere near Matilda, or Babe. Haven't seen the Dawn French Pinocchio, but the Disney one should be a 15 IMO, it is much too scary for children.

I think PG films do push the limits in order to appeal to adults and older children too.

'U' rated films seem to be getting rarer and rarer nowadays.

(Although the Lemony Snicket film is supposed to be black and have a sense of menace, like the book.)

I haven't read the novel of Nanny McPhee, but my two were older when we saw the film. Agree there are some sections that may scare very young children.

There's a film version of Ballet Shoes which is just delightful, very innocent and sweet but really watchable too. My little brother was addicted to it from about 3 until he was at least 8

have started another thread for this

ballet shoes sounds good
