Grainwhole · 29/03/2015 13:05

DD quite a sensitive soul hence the need for 'nice'/ cheery things - nothing with too much awful villainy etc as don't want to upset her, but neeeeed something to distract her on the sofa for a bit whilst I quiver in pain in the corner

She's picked up and loves the Do Re Mi song from the Sound of Music on Youtube so thinking of buying the DVD (and obvo ffwding through the Nazis escape - am I right remembering that's the only sad/ scary bit??)

... if any thoughts on films with songs so much the better as we do love a singalong!

TIA

The Little Princess (tv series based on the Tony Ross books) is absolutely fantastic - no scary bits, great voices and actually quite funny and sweet.

YoureAMeanGirl · 29/03/2015 20:59

Id say the missing parents in frozen is done nicely. DD didn't even notice. She gets upset in the lion king when mufasa dies tho.

She's an odd one. She gets scared at Aladdin when he's leaving the cave and there's lava and wall e terrified her because he was quite destructive but she loves the nightmare before Christmas and courage the cowardly dog. She laughs that they are spooky. Grin

There's a Bing DVD coming out? I My DSs must have it! DS1 asks for Bing every day. DS2 would if he could speak yet. It's the only thing we've found thus far that keeps them both transfixed even through nail-cutting sessions!

irishamy89 · 29/03/2015 21:08

If you get a chromecast Usb stick (£30) and have a smart tv you can play youtube and netflix directly from your tablet to the screen.
Might be useful as I'm sure youtube has a million and one sing alongs etc.
Plus you can change videos directly from your tablet so no need for you to get up and change dvds etc!

DeladionInch · 29/03/2015 21:15

my 2 1/2 yo loves Shrek, there are fighty bits but the music isn't creepy so it's not upsetting iyswim? he gets really excited when one of the songs from the soundtrack comes on the car radio Grin

YoureAMeanGirl · 30/03/2015 09:07

On the same vein as irishamy, I don't have a smart tv but we have an xbox one downstairs and a 360 upstairs. We can watch YouTube, Netflix, amazon, DVDs etc and it's all handy.

Sootgremlin · 30/03/2015 11:19

My ds saw a clip of Frozen and and the parent thing didn't go over his head at all, "where did they go? Are they coming back? Where are their mum and dad? Why aren't they coming back? They're sad, they miss their mum and dad, why isn't her sister speaking to her, she's sad etc etc etc and so on and on and on Grin

Already been suggested, Pocoyo is simply brilliant! No weirdness, just a beautiful interpretation of the mind of a toddler. And Stephen Fry does a superb job of narrating.

Lolly86 · 30/03/2015 19:59

The Winnie the Pooh movie is lovely

wheresthelight · 30/03/2015 21:35

My 19 month old loves frozen, monsters inc and monsters university but she is fearless and climbs the biggest slide in the park and literally throws herself down it to a chorus of parents and grandparents uttering phrases like "oh my God" and my particular favourite of "fucking hell" from the terribly proper elderly couple sat on the bench behind me last week.

I would suggest iplayer and old jacks boat, bing, chuggington, cloud babies, winnie the pooh films, tangled

Mrscog · 31/03/2015 14:50

DS is 3.1, he has loved Tractor Ted for a year now - it's a really good programme for pre-schoolers and each one is 40 mins long. Easy for them to focus on as well as learn about how farms work. Really brilliant. Peppa Pig, Bob the Builder and ITNG still all go down really well too. He's still not got any attention span for films though.

Mrscog · 31/03/2015 14:50

Oh and Bee Bright is also good - narrated by Justin from Something Special.

FlossieTreadlight · 31/03/2015 14:52

Mary Poppins - it's always a safe bet with my sensitive 3 year old

memememum · 01/04/2015 22:13

I agree with bananapickle84. Our DS age 3 is VERY easily terrified and has never had any trouble with Tinkerbell. They're free on Amazon Prime if you have it.

CastielsClevererBetterSister · 10/04/2015 21:28

Some of the Barbie films are good. Sofia the first. PAW patrol seems to be a favourite for all of my DCs at the moment.

NeverNic · 10/04/2015 21:30

My son has real issues with Disney. He got upset when the dog catcher came out in Lady and the Tramp. We watch Cars 2 a lot. Mary Poppins is popular and he likes Finding Nemo and likes sharks weirdly so doesn't get scared at that bit. We have a Sarah and Duck DVD and Baby Jake. The other thing he loves is The Snowman and the Snowdog. The old dog does die and son did ask a lot what happened and where did he go in the beginning, but the music distracts and it's just beautiful and charmingly done. It gets watched a few times a week all year round and almost on repeat before Christmas. It lasts 20mins so perfect for getting a few jobs done

Asleeponasunbeam · 10/04/2015 21:35

I also agree with Tinkerbell. We had to leave the cinema with hysterical screaming when we attempted Frozen, but Tinkerbell is always a hit (DD is 5). Thomas and Dinosaur Train have also been endlessly entertaining and never scary.

Jetgir1 · 10/04/2015 22:14

My eldest in particular is sensitive. Tinkerbell is good. We stayed away from disney mostly when she was younger. Peppa pig, dora the explorer (they have short movies with loadsof annoying songs. I still sing "Isa turn the wheel, turn the wheel Isa in my nightmares"...) old but good is Tikkabilla (playschool/playbus equiv)

Iizzyb · 10/04/2015 22:16

Jungle Book is just great. Much slower pace than Toy Story movies & Cars. We have to ff scar & hyenas in Lion King & Mufasa dying (q a lot of ff-ing tbh) but never an issue with Mowgli & Baloo x

FarFromBeingGruntled · 10/04/2015 22:17

My DS (3.9) is definitely high on the sensitive scale (when we watched Brave he was terrified I was going to turn into a bear!) Bing is a massive hit with him, as is dinosaur train. Abney and Teal used to be his absolute favourite when he was 2. The original Winnie the pooh movie is gorgeous and peril free, and as well as Finding Nemo and the Toy Stories, A Bugs Life and Wall-E have gone down well. Also Disney's Robin Hood is lovely and has good songs. He's never seen the Little Mermaid (Ursula. I daren't!) But is completely obsessed with the song Under the Sea and has watched it countless times on YouTube. You can also get sesame Street songs on YouTube, and they've always been a hit. If your DD likes the books, can I also recommend the TV adaptations of the Gruffalo, Gruffalo's Child, Room on a Broom and Lost and Found? All about 20 mins. There is some mild suspense/peril but I think less scary for my DS because he knows the books so well. Also in my experience he is less scared of a programme if I sit and watch it with him than if I leave him by himself.

OutsSelf · 10/04/2015 22:33

I have a very sensitive 4yr old, any terror or sadness has him wailing. He wept all the way through the Paddington film because of the loss of Paddington's family, and because Paddington left the jungle. The 'funny' scenes based on slapstick humour just looked to him like Paddington was going to get hurt.

Memo we never made past the beginning - Nemo's mum is eaten by a shark. He will watch Totoro but is concerned about the bit where May is lost, Ponyo is a no because the dad is scary.

He loves Sarah and Duck, and Abbey and Teal. You can get 50 episodes of Sarah and Duck on Blinkbox and there are a further handful on BBC iPlayer. There are about 25 Abbey and Teals available at the moment but one of the (The Storm) is a bit worrying to him. There's another not currently available in which Abbey and the Poc Pocs get covered in mud and Teal thinks it's a monster which we can't watch.

There are lots of Pocoyos on YouTube, someone has helpfully loaded three (separate) hours of back to back episodes, none have caused us trouble.

Good luck OP, and congratulations

KatherineMumsnet · 13/05/2015 09:07

Hi all,
The OP has very kindly given us permission to sweep this over to Films, so we will be doing that shortly. Smile
