The Elizabeth Gaskells?

I think some of the old series on TV were very good if you haven't seen some of them yet. Upstairs Downstairs is showing now as is The Grand. Both are quite good. There was one called The Duchess of Duke Street which was OK but a bit daft at times. The Duchess with Keira Knightly was a fairly recent film which was quite good.

YY to Elizabeth Gaskell: North & South!

flancake · 12/03/2015 19:42

Persuasion.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/03/2015 19:55

I haven't seen the Duchess - yay!

I have seen all the tv series including North and South - though I haven't seen North and South since it was on originally and that's got to be 25 years ish?

I could also rematch a Woman of Substance as I also haven't watched that since it was on originally

The Forsyte Saga? Cranford? Wives and Daughters? The BBC redid some the Jane Austens maybe 5 years back, think I only saw Persuasion but there was also Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. Or maybe ITV? Filmwise I can think of Bright Star, Anna Karenina, Amazing Grace or Belle x

If you don't mind forrin stuff, I suggest 'La Reine Margot' and 'A Royal Affair'.
What about 'The Other Boleyn Girl', or 'Elizabeth' and 'Elizabeth: the Golden Age'?
The TV series 'The Crimson Petal and the White', 'Mapp and Lucia' (ITV series with Prunella Scales/Nigel Hawthorn) and 'The House of Elliot'.
You didn't mention any Dickens; the BBC versions of 'Bleak House' (with Gillian Anderson), 'Our Mutual Friend' and 'Little Dorrit' are all
good.

There are some films of Edith Wharton novels you might enjoy - 'The House of Mirth' is a favourite of mine (Gillian Anderson again), plus 'The Age of Innocence' and 'Ethan Frome'.
There are two TV versions of 'Persuasion' I enjoyed, the more recent with Rupert Penry-Jones and Sally Hawkins and an earlier, absolutely superb, version with Amanda Root and Ciaron Hinds (sp.?)
If you haven't seen 'The Heiress' and 'My Cousin Rachel', though much older films ( both with Olivia De Havilland), they two of my favourites.

Happy viewing!

My favourite subject!! My personal favourites:

Persuasion from 1994 or so with Amanda Root. AMAZING.

Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth - not JUST for the wet shirt scene but you know, it helps.

Middlemarch from 1993 or so - soooo rewarding when you stick with it and see the repercussions of the smallest acts.

North &South with Richard Armitage being all moody.

Jane Eyre - various versions but I like the Toby Stephens version best. Recently watched the Timothy Dalton one from the early 1980s and despite the shaky sets it's incredibly well acted and they cover parts of the book that are sometimes glossed over in the films e.g. Jane telling Mr R that he should not send for his best jewels from London because he should know that she doesn't need to be complimented or flattered, that their love is based on the meeting of minds. made me feel a bit sorry that I never said this to DH

Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess - any version really although none do justice to the book.

Mayor of Casterbridge - the version with Ciaran Hinds is pretty good and is such a gripping story

I could go on...

I love |Persuasion with Amanda Root as well. Ciaran Hinds was Captain Wentworth in this version.

There is a lovely version of Wives and Daughters with Keeley Hawes and Bill Patterson.

Also a very Good version of Far from the madding crowd starring Paloma Baeza as Bathsheba

The bbc did an adaptation of Vanity Fair. Phil Glenister is very good in it as Dobbin. He's quite different in this in comparison with Gene Hunt from Life on mars.

Poldark on BBC 1 at the moment is good! Also Banished with Russell Tovey. Pride & Prejudice and Sense and sensibility are classics too.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 09/04/2015 13:33

Middlemarch adaptation was great, it had Rufus Sewell smouldering in a fabulous coat really deep adult treatment of the human condition.
