I need films that aren't kids films

Can someone recommend me some good films to watch that aren't kids films?

Seriously, apart from The Hobbit, which has got me cross as it should never have been stretched out into 3 fecking parts, I've done nowt but watch kids films for the last few years and I need to know what's good out there.

Films I've loved before have been Memoir of a Geisha and A Beautiful Mind. I can't stand horror, though psych thrillers are OK. Also, leave out anything with Adam Sandler in it as I think he's a twat.

Any ideas?

Oooh. Now I've got quite...eclectic...tastes but recently enjoyed:

Saving Mr Banks
Lucy
Grand Budapest Hotel
American Hustle
Behind The Candelabra
The Dallas Buyers Club
Wolf of Wall Street was OK

A film I watched on the off-chance and was blown away by is Gran Torino. But am like you: can't remember the last film that didn't feature a Marvel superhero...

Inception
Life of Pi
The Island
Australia

BagelwithButter · 10/02/2015 10:29

Loads to see at the moment:

Theory of Everything
The Imitation Game
Wild
Birdman
Inherent Vice
Whiplash
Boyhood
American Sniper
Gone Girl (might still be around somewhere)
Selma

Netflix has some good films and also things like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black. Some excellent foreign films too.

I loved Saving Mr Banks & Grand Budapest Hotel ikiboo

I would recommended Osage: Orange County and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

iklboo · 10/02/2015 10:30

LeBear - you say that like it's a bad thing Grin

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 10/02/2015 10:33

Juno
The Heat
Bridesmaids

I watched one called Red Lights the other day, it was brilliant, if you like a plot with a twist.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 10/02/2015 11:01

I watched behind the candelabra on Prime. I thought it was brilliant. Poor fucker ending up with Liberace's face.

What are some of these about?

Not sure about Gone Girl as I just couldn't get into the book, though I really liked her other two. Is it as annoying as the book or worth a go?

I've got Amazon Prime rather than Netflix, so I'll go and have a nosey for some of them if they're on there.

Films pretty true to the book, so if you didn't like the book I wouldn't bother.

But I liked it!

HellKitty · 10/02/2015 11:19

I really liked Gone Girl too! DP hadn't read the book but his sympathies lay with the wife.

Films I've enjoyed recently:
The Book Thief
Grand Budapest Hotel
There is a film listed as a horror on Sky at the moment called Cheap Thrills, it's not a horror, more a psychological thriller and well worth watching.

Along with Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby surprised the hell out of me. I didn't see it for years because I just thought it was a film about boxing.

iklboo · 10/02/2015 14:45

Rob Lowe is EPIC in Behind The Candelabra.

BagelwithButter · 10/02/2015 16:18

YY to Gran Torino - not what I was expecting at all but very, very good.

This thread has made me want to want Under the Candelabra, had completely forgotten about it but think the DVD was only sale for about £5 in Sainsburys recently (should have bought it).

The Education with Carey Mulligan was good. Also The Book Thief and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel mentioned already (2nd one coming out very soon).

I think Ripper Street is on Amazon Prime - was on BBC but they didn't commission Series 3 but Amazon picked it up. Used to enjoy that.

Saving Mr Banks was a nice film, good to see the making of.

But I watched a couple 'mumsy' films: Afternoon Delight and Mom's Night Out which is funny.

Or Dead Snow / Dead Snow 2 if you like black humour and gore..?
Big Eyes by Tim Burton was a cool film too.

Sofarris · 20/02/2015 12:46

I watched Nightcrawler the other weekend, Jake Gylenhall's (or however you spell it) latest one and I thought it was incredible. It does have some slightly dark bits but overall it's a great thriller with some great visuals.

iklboo · 20/02/2015 13:33

Has anyone seen The Babadook? Trying to persuade DH to watch it. Supposed to be a good horror / thriller.

BagelwithButter · 20/02/2015 17:07

iklboo I haven't seen the Babadook but heard great reviews on R4 film programme and from other reviewers too.

They said it was scary and very well made.

iklboo · 20/02/2015 17:09

Thanks Bagel. I'm really in the mood for a good scare. Might keep working on him for a watch tomorrow night.
