Decent film on UK Netflix Shocker!

Last night I watched a wonderful indie movie written by Joss Wheedon called In Your Eyes. It has a bit of an odd premise- two souls telepathically linked who have never met, and lead very different lives- but it works surprisingly well. The lead actors are really excellent, and the overall effect is charming without slipping into twee, with some really funny and moving moments.

I often find it hard to sift through the dross on Netflix, but this one is a hidden gem. It's recent too, from last year, which is another surprise for Netflix. Recommended!

I started that- I should get back into it. Do give the film a go- it's perfect for a Sunday night.

I Love joss weden stuff, thanks for the tip off. That's my plan for when the in laws finally leave (weeks away yet but here's dreaming)

CormoranStrike · 05/02/2015 23:57

Sounds good, I haven't found anything good on netflix for a while.

BOFster · 06/02/2015 00:16

It's not the most radical film in the world, but there's definitely something about it. A lot of it is in the sheer likeability of the main characters, I think.

Thanks for recommendation - I will try and watch it. I think Netflix is great! So cheap and loads of stuff on there to watch, I've got quite a few on my list:

Lunchbox (Indian film, recommended by Jason Solomons, film critic)
The Hunt (with Mads Mikkelsen)
Arbitrage
Amour
Le Week-end
Walking on Sunshine
A Long Way Down
A Dangerous Method
Invisible Woman
Winter's Bone (with Jennifer Lawrence, her "breakout" film)
Fish Tank (with Michael Fassbender)
Capote
20 Feet from Stardom
The Queen of Versailles
Spiral (French crime series)

I've watched House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Still got to commit to watching Breaking Bad! I'm never going to see all these, am I?!

BOFster · 06/02/2015 00:21

I've seen Winter's Bone (bleak, but amazing), and Fish Tank (same). In Your Eyes has that off-beat vibe, but it's a lot bit more feel-good.

Brilliant list- thanks, I'll check those others out.

I'm into The Bridge atm, it's subtitled but really interesting. DH and I binge watched Brooklyn 99 too and loved that Grin
I liked Amour, that was reallt good, and I liked Lore, Mr Nobody and Blue Is The Warmest Colour. All great films that make you think a bit.

BOFster · 06/02/2015 00:32

Ah, I have seen A Long Way Down. Yep, definitely worth a watch. I saw Le Weekend too- it was good, but definitely darker and more cynical than the marketing suggested.

Thank you!!

BOFster · 06/02/2015 00:34

The Bridge is nothing short of fantastic. I think that's where Netflix excels- the experience of binge watching great TV series which used to cost you £££££s to take a chance on in box set form.

Good to know you've seen some of the films for Mr Nobody and Lore, haven't heard of those.

Saw Fish Tank a few years ago but still think of it sometimes. I thought there were some mesmerising moments in it and MF was very good (before he became an X-man)

I'll take a look at The Bridge. Managed to miss out on all the Scandi shows when they were on TV and I like that kind of thing (and certainly don't mind subtitles).

For some reason, haven't felt a great urge to watch Breaking Bad. My son said (and loads of others obvs) that it was fantastic, but just not in the mood.

CormoranStrike · 06/02/2015 23:35

Long Way Down us very good, much more fun than the subject matter would have you think.

trader21c · 07/02/2015 01:55

Vote here for Lunchbox lovely film - did Jason S recommend any others?

BagelwithButter · 07/02/2015 11:18

He loved Leviathan Said it was the best film of 2014. His Top 10 were:

Leviathan, Nightcrawler, Boyhood, Paddington, Under the Skin, Mr Turner, Two Days One Night, Lunchbox, A Most Wanted Man, Wakolda

He reviews on BBC London Radio 94.9 on Thursdays (on Robert Elms show between 12-3)

BOFster · 07/02/2015 12:53

Nightcrawler was amazing. Under The Skin was quite the weirdest film I'd seen in years Grin.

Watching A Long Way Down Grin

Ratarse · 07/02/2015 23:09

I'm pretty much laid up with spd at the moment so have recently watched the entire series of Breaking Bad, have to say it's well worth all the hype.

BOF I've just watched In Your Eyes - loved it!! The lead characters were what made it. I love how there was no attempt to explain how or what was happening, you were just going through it with the characters. I probably won't recommmend it to DH though Grin

BOFster · 09/02/2015 13:35

That's exactly how I felt about it except my DP is a complete softie about romantic films Grin
