What age for Into The Woods?

A friend of mine took her 5 year old... Another friend wouldn't take her 9 year old...

Has anyone seen it and can shed some light?

It's Sondheim and fairly dark and more of the original Grimms tales rather than Disney ie stepmother hacking of parts of feets to get the slipper to fit. There were youngish children sitting behind us and they talked all the way through, but the mum didnt stopped them and just stared at her phone, so i cant tell if they were bored or just not able to behave themselves in the cinema. It's not Frozen and does not have a Disney feel about it and the songs are not sing along type songs. It is more of an opera with a little bit of talking, rather than a film with songs.
There are a few deaths but you don't really see them, and a big scary giant.

I took my 6 year old twins. It didn't scare them but they were bored stiff ( as was I ). I would say this film is only enjoyable if you are really into musicals as it is literally non stop singing, and as pp said they are not sing along type songs - very theatrical. I hated it.

I took DDs (4 & 6), they both loved it. I fell asleep

My dds 4 and 9 loved it. It is quite dark but they don't scare easily. It's not typical Disney though.

Took dd today, she is 9 and found it ok. By the end I was ready to eat my own head rather than watch another minute

It's crap, so I wouldn't bother. I was very disappointed as I really thought it would be good!

Did anyone else find James cordon strange casting, at least the other actors can sing or act

Its very dark, the music is Sondheim, and if you look at the trailers you'll see its an acquired taste, you couldn't sing along.

I took dd 11 and we both loved it but knew the music already and what to expect with the disneyfied version.

Listen to a few tracks before you go, its not really mainstream though and its different I think for disney to do this.

Lots of people left when we went, they didn't know what it would be like and i don't blame them if they were expecting something else.

I was very, very bored. My 7 and 9 year old enjoyed it but it certainly wasn't a film they raved about afterwards. It's very long too. I didn't think it was particularly dark so I'd say 5+ would be fine unless very sensitive.

Well, I went today and took my 4 year old. We were both very very bored!

I loved James Cordon and all the cast were excellent. The only complaint we had was it was too long and slow after the wedding, other than that DH Dd 17 and I really enjoyed it.
