but take your hankies cos it's also a real weepie. And a true story.

I was 16 in 1984, and this film brought it all back - the music, the clothes, everything was just as I remembered it. I went along thinking it was going to be a trite little film, but it was fantastic.

Definitely recommend it.

Have heard several interviews recently of cast members ( & boy is it a stellar cast) & it sounds fab.

Can't wait!

Tiredemma · 13/09/2014 13:08

I have just watched a trailer- looks amazing. Desperate to go and watch it

MrsDavidBowie · 13/09/2014 22:43

Went this afternoon. Fantastic film

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 13/09/2014 22:45

Loved it. Everyone in it was brilliant. I may have cried a bit.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 13/09/2014 22:48

I saw it yesterday, easily the best film I've seen all year. Can't wait for the DVD.

MrsDavidBowie · 13/09/2014 22:49

Yes I cried too.
Thought Paddy Consadine and Dominic West were particularly good.

edamsavestheday · 13/09/2014 22:51

Loved it. Witty and moving. Bill Night in pensioner role though!

Figster · 25/09/2014 21:03

Planning on going in a couple weeks once it comes to our local independent cinema

onedev · 25/09/2014 21:23

Another here who loved it too! Fab Grin

Eastpoint · 25/09/2014 21:32

I am the same age as the op and also loved it.

There is a free exhibition on at the V&A called Disobedient Objects which has lots of things like cards reminding you of your rights should you be arrested etc. V interesting.

Have just seen the guy who plays Mark Ashton in another film and didn't recognise him at first. And it turns out he is from the U.S. I think he's going to be a phenomenal actor.

onedev · 26/09/2014 21:12

Completely agree Princess

Seriouslyffs · 26/09/2014 22:11

Cracking film- loved it!
Did anyone recognise Bromley? He was so familiar but I looked at IMDB and nothing rang a bell.

Monten · 26/09/2014 22:14

Cried buckets at the end. The whole cinema burst into applause (not at me crying, at the film). Highly recommend.

Haywire · 26/09/2014 22:25

I had quite low expectations for this, I thought it would be shallow or worthy .Both Wrong , it was great . Brilliant cast , writing, locations, score and bloody funny. Laughed lots cried buckets. Can't ask more of a film really.

cruikshank · 26/09/2014 22:31

I also thought when I first heard about it that it was going to be one of those dismally parochial British films but actually ... what a breath of fucking fresh air. Stellar cast - all of them proper very good actors - great feel for the time and place of the story, all sorts of little details there. Snappy dialogue, well-paced and really quite affecting in places. They've really done the story justice, and got loads of important messages across as well without being in the least preachy/sledgehammery. Loved it.

Eastpoint · 27/09/2014 07:01

George MacKay won the BAFTA for Best Rising Star last year, he was in Defiance, Sunshine on Leith,

Eastpoint · 27/09/2014 07:05

How I Live Now, Private Peaceful, Hunky Dory, The Boys are Back, The Brief, Rose & Maloney, Footsteps in the Snow. From how many things hes been in & how young he is he must be in steady employment.

I liked learning what the characters had gone on to do, like Sian Jones who ended up an MP.

pebblestack · 27/09/2014 07:10

Saw it last weekend, fantastic.

I wept buckets when they sang Bread & Roses, what a moving scene

cruikshank · 27/09/2014 17:19

Yes, that bit was fantastic. So nice to see a film unashamedly about solidarity.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2014 17:28

Dying to see this. I was 21 and living in South Wales during the Miners Strike.

Plus DS met Bill Nighy in Swansea when he was filming this and he was very sweet to him and his mates and let them take lots af pictures.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/09/2014 17:30

I absolutely loved it, except the all standing up singing bit which I thought was horribly over-sentimental. Wept buckets at the end though. :(

Best film I've seen this year.

FunkyBoldRibena · 27/09/2014 17:31

Great film. Saw it last weekend. Shed a tear or two at the end.

OneStepCloser · 27/09/2014 17:39

So pleased to see a thread on this film, saw it last night and I thought it was absolutely fantastic, brilliantly cast and so well written, funny but painful. Took me right back to 1984.

I thought it was also a great social study film, I was telling my children last night about how predudice the world was such a short time ago, and how interesting that it showed that the people from deep in the countryside were actually far more embracing, understanding and forward thinking than many in suburbia (at the time) my own memories and experiences show that as well. How terrified we became from the mass adverts on Aids, and how scary that was then.

And yes, our cinema was in tears at the end, including my non sentimental husband.

(arf, Im glad someone named Dominic West, that had been bugging me all night, wasnt he good (along with the rest of the cast))

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/09/2014 17:41

The guy who plays Bromley was excellent in, "Sunshine on Leith" too - and he has such a lovely face!
