Is The Hobbit film better than LOTR?

I've read the hobbit and loved it. Read LOTR which was ok though not as good.

Watched LOTR films which to be honest I thought were all a bit meh. Is it worth trying The Hobbit?

i am asking s3

he said " same level of awesomeness"

LadyMountbatten · 13/04/2013 17:50

i have only seen hobbit

i hate all that crap, but i liked

saintmerryweather · 13/04/2013 17:54

I didnt think it was as good as lotr. its not as epic, and cgi is very overused which i found disappointing.

VerySmallSqueak · 13/04/2013 17:55

I fell asleep I'm afraid Blush

I think you have to be in the right mood....

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2013 17:56

When I read the books I liked the storyline in The Hobbit better.

Ha, yes. I fell asleep in LOTR. To be honest I never finished the last book and have no idea if they ever destroyed the bloody ring. I'm assuming they did.

I saw The Hobbit at the theatre too.
That was good.

mybelovedmonster · 13/04/2013 17:59

I personally prefer LOTR, but really did like The Hobbit as well. After hearing lots of reviews about how drawn out it was I didn't find it that way at all, loads happens!

Agree about the cgi though - there is too much and its got that look about it that certain scenes have been done a certain way for the 3D bonus.

Foosyerdoos · 13/04/2013 17:59

Me and ds watched 'The Hobbit' just this afternoon (3rd time for me). I really loved it and preferred it to LOTR, however I think the film of 'The Hobbit' is better than the book but the LOTR films are not better than the books. Also some of the dwarves are hot (not a phrase I ever thought I would type).

Tortington · 13/04/2013 17:59

i am a huge fan of the books - my fanness cannot be underestimated

but they fucked the hobbit over royally - making huge scenes out of sentences

the LOTR film was a masterpiece -

i always think that watching a film will never ever beat a book bcuase nothing can compete with my imagination,

but LOTR did - with the exeption of Boromir - all the cast were EXACTLY how i imagined them

saintmerryweather · 13/04/2013 18:00

They go into a lot more detail in the films and pad the story out and develop some of the characters which is good i think (plus aidan turner is gorgeous), the way theyve shot it with the higher frame rate is stunning but yeah....cgi is distracting

mybelovedmonster · 13/04/2013 18:02

Custardo - interesting you say that. I thought I knew the Hobbit reasonably well but there are whole bits in the film that I just don't remember from the book at all.

I really loved the Gollum bit though.. brilliant.

Tortington · 13/04/2013 18:15

yeah - i was watching it and turning to dh with a raised eyebrow

he is a most massive fan, more than me he knows elvish songs - its ridiculous Grin

out of the theatre i'm like " wtf?"

he said " read the book again"

I read the book again

and i'm like WHAT THE FUCK - MAKING SHIT UP to make a three hour movie out of a book that doesn't even take that long to read

its sacred text

fucking about with it for your own capitalist greed you twats

Tortington · 13/04/2013 18:16

like the radagast bits

i mean in the book its hardly anything at all

mybelovedmonster · 13/04/2013 18:17

Oh phew - it was the radagast bit I was referring too. Those rabbits were ridiculous.

VerySmallSqueak · 13/04/2013 18:22

I have to admit that I've never read the book.
I'm going to have to,aren't I?

Tbh I didn't understand what the hell any of it was about when I saw it at the theatre, but I enjoyed the sets and everything! Blush

poppymagnum · 13/04/2013 18:22

I watched it last night.

I don't care about the crap CGI and over extended story fillingness.

Martin Freeman is awesome!!!!!!

secretscwirrels · 13/04/2013 18:24

No it isn't.
It goes on and on and on and on....
First film I've seen where they put stuff in rather than leave it out compared with the book.
15 year old DS on the other hand loved it.

saintmerryweather · 13/04/2013 18:27

I meant the main baddie orc being cgi...i mean come on...if they can make a costume for lurtz in lotr they can make one for this baddie! It just feels like they took the easy option (i know creating a whole cgi character cant really be easy but come on!)

i reckon radagast was put in to pay back all the numpties who whinged about tom bombadil being left out of lotr. Im not a fan of the books!

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2013 18:39

Custado, that's what I'm worried about, it been really drawn out. Tree films out the book is ridiculous.

Mmmm, might give it a miss. I don't want it to spoil the book for me.

Having read half of the first chapter,I did like seeing what the hobbit hole was shown like.

I now want to live in a hobbit hole.T'was lovely.

hattymattie · 13/04/2013 19:10

Agree with everything Custardo said except loved Boromir in LOTR (even if he was not as described in the book, he was Sean Bean). Was gravely upset at the miscasting of Faramir.

Enjoyed the Hobbit but I love everything Tolken. LOTR better but nothing beats the books.

BelfastBloke · 17/04/2013 23:06

Custardo and Viva, would it make a difference if the film was called "Middle Earth" rather than "The Hobbit"? Because while they did make some stuff up, lots of it was stuff which Tolkien wrote, just not in the actual children's book.

For example, the battle between the Dwarves and the Goblins at the gates of Moria, where Thorin's grandfather's head was chopped off by Azog. That's not in the Hobbit book, but it is in Tolkien's description of the Dwarf race, elsewhere.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 26/04/2013 19:11

Saw it on the plane and gave up watching about half an hour in as every one else was watching The Impossible and it looked much better. It turned out to be better although it was also only really a 20 min story padded out to make a movie.
