Well should I? Can I? Will the cinema even let us in?

Kids are desperate to see it.

Re the sexism: His girlfriend in the film is reduced to eye-candy for most of it, and when she is caught up in the action, all she seems to do is scream, run in high heels and pout/cry a lot. Oh yeah, and stay remarkably pristine.

No, there are no female transformers, either Grin.

TotemPole · 11/07/2011 14:58

notso, I think the Twilight films would be suitable for a typical 11 year old. Remember to tell her that vampires aren't really that poncey.

spookshowangel · 11/07/2011 16:26

oh yes but to prove she is more than just eye candy right at the end she does save optimus prime with her clever clever brain because she does have one you know.

SomekindofSpanish · 11/07/2011 17:30

Oh yes, her one moment of glory Hmm.

Took my 5 and 7 year old yesterday. They loved it, tbh I don't think they noticed the swearing, and any sexual comments go straight over their heads. They love the previous 2 films and we were delighted that it was rated 12A and not 12 so that they could see it. The cinema itself was full of families with young children and apart from the length of the film which required toilet breaks there were no problems with any of the kids. Each to there own as far as this and other films (HP and Jurassic Park threads)are concerned, only you know your own children.

Nothing like getting good, healthy attitudes to violence and to women into their heads as early as possible.

What fo those film classifiers know? Your child your rules.

niceguy2 · 11/07/2011 22:42

On paper this is my sort of film. But I do agree with Mark Kermode on the fact the final battle scene is way too long. He's spot on with the fact the last hour is spent with lots of flying bits and I'd got confused as to which robot was which.

The girl is eye candy....oh yes! Grin but both her and Shia La Beouf are rather superfluous to the film.

I wouldn't say its too violent for a 9yr old as long as they are sensible enough to know its a fantasy film. But it is a terrible film.

Bloody hell my nearly-5 year old and 7 year old watch Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom, Garfield and Dora the Explorer.

If you let them watch Transformers and similar at 5 what do you do with them when they get to 12? Watch Saw, or The Hostel? Shouldn't be a problem if they've been desensitised I guess Confused

muminthemiddle · 11/07/2011 22:53

I think YABU. When I go to see a 12A film I don't want little kids in there making noise or moaning because they can't see as an adult has sat in front of them.

I won't be seeing this film as it is not my cup of tea but do like to see films where I hope I can sit in peace and watch. (Yeah I know some adults are a pain in the arse too).

Nanny0gg · 12/07/2011 00:09

Am I the only one who doesn't believe for one second that all children are that different?
Why the desperation for children to watch TV and films that are clearly meant for an older market?
Why can't they just wait?

4madboys · 12/07/2011 08:13

the rules state that a child under 12 can go IF accompanied by an adult who judges that the film is suitable for them hence allowing parents to make their OWN judgement about what their OWN child can cope with! shock horror parents making a judgement about their own child!

my kids sit quietly through films and dont pester adults or moan about not being able to see (they provide booster cushions in our local cinema so kids can see if there are adults or taller people sat in front of them) if they didnt behave we would take them out, but the cinema is an occasional treat and we have never had to take them out yet, they know how to behave!

my kids also watch ben and holly, dora, garfield etc, but they see the occasionial film, they like chitty chitty bang bang, and one of our dinosaurs is missing, lots of classic films as well but the boys love transformers and as for conditioning them to violence, they are robots, its make believe in the same way that they sometimes play with toy lightsabers or water pistols or guns made out of lego, its imaginative!! they are well aware of the difference between what is real and what isnt!

like i said language wise they will hear the same if not worse in the school playground, esp ds1 who is at high school! yet he is 11 and technically not 12 so should he not see it? laughable!

they dont play violent videogames, i wouldnt let them watch scary/horror type films, but this is a film about robots!!!! its not real, its based on a kids toy and tv show (origionally) so of course children are going to see it!

TotemPole · 12/07/2011 10:25

Doctor Who is PG, and has scenes that are scarier than a lot of 12A films.

TotemPole · 12/07/2011 10:30

I take that back. Some of the series are rated 12 on DVDs.

HollyGoHeavily · 12/07/2011 10:41

It is incredibly long, incredibly violent and terribly misogynistic. Why the hell would you take a small child of 6 to see it?

TwoIfBySea · 12/07/2011 10:46

I took dts (9) to see it. There is much more than robots fighting each other, quite a bit of human suffering. I usually vet these kind of films beforehand but thought it would look great in 3D (it didn't) so this was a cinema treat for them as they love Transformers.

Wish I'd left it tbh but I wasn't made to take them. It is perfectly acceptable to use your own judgement you know.

As for games ratings, I was furious last week when dts2 told me their friend (same age) has some pretty horrendous titles & they'd been playing them while @ his house. I wouldn't have taken dts's friends to a 12A film so am I being a hypocrite for not wanting them to play games I would never buy them?

Oh & Arcee isn't in this one so no girl Transformers at all. And the female character is exceptionally annoying.

Sorry these keep posting twice, bloomin' phone plus clumsy fingers!

TotemPole · 12/07/2011 11:04

When they play the PC games the players are participating in the violence, I think that makes a game worse than film/TV.
