I saw a preview yesterday. It is excellent, just a wonderful film. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are superb in it, even Helena BC (who I have an irrational dislike of) was great. There are some lovely witty bits to counteract the more serious parts.
I can't recommend it enough. If you aren't moved by the end I would suggest that you are either a) made of stone or b) perhaps haven't understood and should get back creating tickers over at the other site Wink

I'll be interested to hear some more reviews when others have been to see it.

ooh looking forward to this, our local fleapit has decided to it's too highbrow for our population so have to search further afield!

traceybath · 06/01/2011 18:13

Oh I'm really looking forward to seeing this.

Radio 4 had the radio play version on today (has been on before) and that was very good too.

FelicityParpworth · 06/01/2011 18:27

YY I heard the radio 4 one was good. It lacked the added bonus of lots of Mr Firth who, since he came out of the lake with the wet shirt, I've had a huge crush on soft spot for.
Of course my lust admiration comes solely from his role in Austen, certainly not the one in Bridget Jones 'I like you, just as you are' Grin

I'm sure it's good but I'm getting fed up with all the hype. There have been so many previews and extracts on TV I feel like I've already seen all the best bits.

FelicityParpworth · 06/01/2011 21:12

True - if it's too overhyped you will be disappointed. Ignore my first post, I've heard it's a pile of shite.

I saw it this afternoon and loved it, fantastic acting from
Colin Firth. Like OP not a fan of HBC but have to say she was really good. Plus the added bonus of Guy Pearce being in it . Would highly recommend!

Have also just seen it. It's wonderful! Colin Firth acts as oppossed to just being Colin Firth and Geoffry Rush is superb. And agree on the HBC fronts also.

It's fantastically well shot and the music is so moving.

I had a tear in my eye the whole way through but it's not mawkish - it's laugh out loud funny at times too.

Can't recommend highly enough.

SixtyFootDoll · 07/01/2011 18:54

THe pain in Firths face when he was trying to speak was so visible.

Rush was so funny. THe sets, the cosstumes, the lighting it was all so fantastic.

I hope Firth gets the Oscar for his pefronmance

Superb film. Hugely emotional but in a kind of under-the-surface-there's-a-war-on way; you really had to spot the emotion as it flashed by which made it enormously believable given the era, social context etc.

Thought CF was magnificent but am a huge fan anyway, and was prepared to put up with HBC but actually thought she was perfect for the role.

Great to see little karen from Outnumbered making an appearance too, and Rush was outstanding.

Campaspe · 09/01/2011 19:11

I saw this today and loved it. As everyone says, Firth is brilliant, and so is Geoffrey Rush. The story of how the king overcomes his impediment to make a key speech that inspires the nation is moving and inspiring, even if you're not particulary interested in royal films. I just wanted to get up and cheer when he managed to complete his speech and his staff applauded him! Surprising amount of humour in it as well. Easily the best film I've seen for a while.

BelligerentGhoul · 09/01/2011 19:13

I really fancy seeing this, having seen a trailer when we went to see Harry Potter. I can't be doing with CF really but the film looked good.

Ponders · 09/01/2011 19:23

I have been longing to see this since the first reviews (some time ago now, why does it take so long before it's on general release?)

MappandLucia · 09/01/2011 20:19

LOVED it so much - it's absolutely superb.

Very moving - both dh and I were a bit teary on exit!

SleepWhenImDead · 09/01/2011 20:22

Is it too girly for a man to see? Or is it better to plan to go with friends?

SixtyFootDoll · 09/01/2011 23:10

Not girly at all my DH really enjoyed it

saw it on Saturday at our local which very rarely opens its balcony - this time it did and cinema as full as I've ever seen it. I was so gripped I stayed awake all the way through - my benchmark for a really great film! People clapped at the end! Thought CF brilliant, I'm sure he'll get an Oscar nomination. Not a film for determined anti-monarchists, but I was fascinated thinking that the child Princess Elizabeth is still alive, wonder if she will watch it?

dinkystinky · 10/01/2011 10:15

Saw it last night - truly excellent film! When it finished, I wanted to go back and watch it from the beginning all over again. Unexpectedly funny as well as moving.

squeaver · 10/01/2011 10:36

Excellent film. Great performances all round. I though HB-C was great but also really enjoyed Guy Pierce as Edward VIII and Derek Jacobi as the Archbish.

minibmw2010 · 10/01/2011 11:06

Went to see it yesterday afternoon. DH wasn't keen but came out saying he thought it was excellent. Colin Firth is brilliant and everyone else (except Tim Spall as Churchill) were great too. The pain in CF's face when he's trying to get his words out, absolutely heartbreaking.

londonartemis · 10/01/2011 11:22

Agree.
Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Don't worry if you can't stand CF - he was so good you immediately forget it's him and think it's George VI. The terror in his eyes in his opening scene...
As for Geoffrey Rush superb..timing, verve. And that bit in the Coronation Chair!!

DH and I wanted to watch it all over again.

Mumsnut · 10/01/2011 12:15

Marvellous. Can't praise it enough.

jugglingjo · 10/01/2011 12:39

Sounds good, also from the clips I've seen.

I see it's rated 12. Would that mean I couldn't take my 11 year old DD with me, or is it discretionary ?

How long do you think it will be on in cinemas before comes out on DVD ? May wait till then, although it looks as though it would be good on big screen too. Possibly nice for a girl's night in though !

MappandLucia · 10/01/2011 12:47

Jugglingjo, I planning on seeing it again with my 12 yr old. Under 12s can go if accompanied by an adult to a 12A.

Be warned there is lots of swearing!
