Suggestions of horror film to watch with 13 year old DS please....

DS wants to have a scarey film night with us on Halloween night. We did this last year and watched Shaun of the Dead, which he loved. However he says he wants to see more of a 'real' horror film this year. I'm happy to go with my instincts rather than the film rating, but I can't think of anything which is scarey enough to be fun but not so much as to stop him sleeping for a week. Any suggestions please??

Thank you [hsmile]

Poltergeist? I saw it in the cinema when I was 13 and I'm not a big fan of scary films, but did "enjoy" it. Old now of course and prob completely out of touch.

Look up the BBC's 'Ghostwatch' that they did about 15 years ago. You can get it on DVD. Scared myself silly with it as a teen! Grin Michael Parksinson gets possessed!!!!

(Although maybe Parky, Sarah Green and Mike Smith aren't so scary to today's kids...)

Moo moo farm

I heartily recommend Zombieland. Excellent movie - if he liked Shaun of the dead then he will love it.

if he wants a 'classic' horror movie I'd be going for Nightmare on Elm Street obviously - if that's too hardcore/old then Creepshow might be a decent compromise.

ghostwatch is a brilliant choice.
creepshow is also good, but for a young'un....hmm 'twilight zone-the movie' is great.

my dd1 is 15 and bought the whole dvd box set of freddy. but she did like the crazies.
not sure what rating that is.
even though she loves that kind of stuff, somehow i still refuse to let her watch 'spit on your grave' 'driller killer' and 'last house on the left'. she found the exorcist hilarious.

my fault for leaving 18 rated dvds out on the shelf.

her bad, cos im taking her to see paranormal activity 2 on friday...she will love it, and she can hold my hand?Hmm

The Shining. Huge amount of scares without violence or sex. BTW, I read the book and couldn't go to bed until I had finished. It was so scary and I was only 25 at the time.

MrsRhettKilledTheButler · 25/10/2010 01:12

the shining is waaay too scary Grin

the child on the bike going down the hallway! the moving animal bushes... the bath/shower curtain thing Shock

scared me shitless aged 15!

ravenAK · 25/10/2010 01:15

Yes yes The Shining!

Or the original Night of the Living Dead? Scary, tense & clever, but effects are dated enough not to cause major trauma [hgrin] - it's B/W.

What about Don't Look Now or Village of the Damned (the black and white English version)?

Or, if he doesn't mind silents, Nosferatu or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

MooMoo, do let us know what you choose!

was thinking teh twlight zone movie too, i remember ds loved the langoliers (sp) too.

def don't let him watch high rated films. give him something to look forward to when he's older!

wildscaryface · 26/10/2010 14:41

what about something like Sixth Sense

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/10/2010 14:43

What is that Nosferatu film which has Willem Defoe in? That was very good, was funny as well as scary.

I would stick to somethinhg horror/scary rather than a full on horror film, tbh. Zombieland is an excellent idea. Was very funny - Bill Murray is great in it.

Scream is another funny/scary film.

LLKH · 26/10/2010 17:58

GetOrfMoiLand, Shadow of the Vampire. It has Eddie Izzard too.

Brilliant film, one of DH's and my favourites. It also has a lot of discussion potential.

bintofbohemia · 26/10/2010 18:00

The others? THat's pretty eerie without being OTT.

The Shining is one of my all time favourite films but I have to not watch it too often as it really freaks me out!

southeastastra · 26/10/2010 19:09

was thinking about this in the bath Grin

army of darkness would appeal to 13 year olds i reckon, it's barmy and very funny
