"Mummy, is that a boy or a girl?"

Asked about a male staff member in next who I can only assume was trans identified as had long hair, "womens" clothes and breasts (no bra so nipples visible through top - classy). Ended up being served by him but thankfully the question was asked out of earshot.

I just said "I'm not sure." What would you say? More importantly, what would you say if they asked you IN FRONT of the person, or even asked the person themselves?

Already hard work trying to convince him girls can have short hair and boys can have long hair, etc. This is a child who will hold my hair off my face and say "look! Now you're a boy!" So I am reticent to turn around and contradict myself by saying a man in a dress is a woman.

Edit for typo.

@BringBackCatsEyesno I mean see them with my own eyes, like properly look at someone. Stop trying to put words in my mouth. I rarely look at anybody when I’m walking down the street, however if I’m sitting across from someone in a doctors surgery for more than a few minutes then yes I would be able to tell. Moreso if I hear them speak. I don’t need to interact with them directly.

Well yes, but that's not what PP said.

I know - I was referring to the comment about passing them in the street. The 2 situations are so different that they have no bearing on one another and so it's irrelevant if you've passed a man in the street who is presenting his idea of womanhood and didn't immediately clock it for a number of reasons.

I'm pretty sure that pigs can't fly, and I've never seen one fly. But I haven't looked at the sky continually my whole life. Theoretically some may have sneaked past me, so maybe they can fly But I still know that they can't 😂.

I’m not sure perhaps wasn’t the worst reply.

Or do what I do with my aging mother who (seemingly like many MNers) just needs reminding sometimes “it doesn’t really matter and isn’t really any of our business. They seem happy and they’re doing a good job as a shopkeeper and that’s not affected by if they’re a boy or a girl.”

Maybe now might be the right time to have a conversation with your child, about not commenting on a person's appearance.

It’s a boy but why is that important ?

“This is the type of person to stay away from.”
