Find me a religion?

I’m having a horrible time divorcing, ex behaving awfully. I read about how prayer affects the brain recently and thought you know I’m actually ready to pray to god for help, but goddammit why are they all male? I can’t do it. I want no more men in my life, not even god. Can someone please point me to a womens religion?

Hindu’s have a lot of female deities. I’ve always been partial to Durga the warrior aspect of female divinity. You can also pick the Greek and Roman goddesses.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 16/06/2026 16:20

OP did you decide who to pray to? I've realised if you do it with prayer beads it's easier to 🫴 concentrate on it so your brain gets a proper rest.

I got as far as finding a local group of pagans then realising they meet on a day of the week I’m not free. Then forgot all about it. I don’t think I’m really what any religion is looking for in its believers. But on the plus side court went ok without any specific God(ess) being invoked.

Become a Humanist, much more fulfilling. You are not praying to a God, you are just internally thinking things through. Alternatively just go and sit in nature and reflect, better than sitting in a church.

@HostaCentral

I think whether it's more fulfilling or not depends what the person is after.

If an individual wants to communicate with non-corporeal spirits (whether deities or some other kind of spirit) then Humanism would not necessarily be more fulfilling, as belief in spirits of any kind is not (as I understand it) a part of Humanism.

So I think it comes to personal taste/desire. For someone like myself, who actively wants to communicate with spirits (and practices at doing so) Humanism wouldn't be appropriate, but it would be for many others.

Maybe try meditation instead?

Paganism is very diverse - it's not a single religion in itself, just an umbrella term for multiple religions and spiritual traditions.

So I'm not sure that it could be said that "paganism" is looking for any specific type of person. Paganism is mostly polytheistic (though not always) so as long as you're open to the idea of polytheism as a possibility, I think that's all that's needed. Many pagans practice magic (real magic, not stage magic stuff) but not all do. There's quite a bit of crossover with witchcraft and occultism (the pagan moot I attend will discuss spell work, astrology, tarot, psychic ability, etc) but you don't have to be into any of those things in order to be pagan.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 19/06/2026 16:53

Ooh I wonder if my yoga teacher is Pagan? She's got a retreat coming up I quite fancy but I'm not keen on tarot which she sometimes does in yoga class.

@desperesperation

She might be, but equally she might not be. Those things can (and do) crossover, but they're not intrinsically the same thing.

Goddesses played highly influential roles, embodying both nurturing and destructive forces.

Isis: The goddess of motherhood, magic, and resurrection. She was considered one of the most powerful deities, eventually evolving into a major mystery religion throughout Greece and Rome.

Hathor: Associated with music, dancing, pleasure, and fertility. She had a vast, female-led clergy and established religious ranks specifically for women.

Ma'at: The personification of truth, cosmic order, and balance. She informed the behavior of the people, the laws of the land, and the powers of other deities.

Sekhmet & Tefnut: Goddesses embodying the wrathful aspects of the sun, often called upon for protection or personified in storms.

Look towards nature - a great healer. You don't have to hug a tree (but you could!) but you can talk to trees. They've seen everything. Also having (or having access to) a pet or other animal, horse, dolphin, donkey etc. They have no clue who Jesus was or what religion is.

MrsGaryMcNumanface · 19/06/2026 17:55

Hinduism has it all: the concept of the Divine Mother, the force that animates the whole of creation
Or you could just go and see Amma, the hugging saint. Lifechanger.

PenelopeJoanSterling · 19/06/2026 22:00

also transhumanism ?

Its a "he" but in the bible God is actually a spirit so make of that what you will. I do not know why its always a he but there are plenty of she in the bible too. Mary for example, the virgin birth story. Plenty more she's in the bible too. Look into it if you have a real interest ask God sincerely...He will answer you.

God created that nature and the plants for food and healing the bible says so.

SisterTeatime · 19/06/2026 22:21

I think of God as male and female (and beyond human ideas of sex) and as both mother and father, as much as possible. I’m more or less Christian. Apparently even the Abrahamic God used to have a wife in earlier times. All deities are human projections so I wouldn’t worry about God or religion being ‘male’.

Trees, the tides, moon, stars, animals etc are grounding and comforting, making me conscious of the workings of lots of things bigger and longer lasting than me.

There is lots of interesting content about saints on Instagram, which I enjoy. Lots of them are women and it’s very interesting learning more about them.

I hope things get better for you soon.

PenelopeJoanSterling · 20/06/2026 01:19

there maybe a supreme being but anything written by humans is tainted

I'm more of a big bang theory person. Don't believe in God or the bible.

thats the thing anything tainted or witten by humans is potential corruption, plus why does religion alter if a book was written that was gods instrcutions for society and society changed or added to the book then thats not gods words thats humans making it up

Can’t remember the source (sorry) but heard once that a witch is a woman who advocates for herself on the spiritual plane.

I’d suggest dropping on the long running Any Witches Here threads while you figure it out.

Buddhism is the religion which afaik has particularly been shown to have beneficial effects on the brain. But it’s not a quick fix - it’s non-theistic, I think the changes come from years of meditation not divine intervention.

Or psilocybin/acid = fast track to the same state 😜

I guess because society changes and we're influenced by so many other things. It's not just one book, the bible, - if you could read and were able to read it - or a random group of people going around preaching. Today this society isn't particularly religious or people might adopt their own version of religion, like OP. People can see religion as controlling, especially for women, and the cause of so many wars and divisions.

@JillThePlantKiller

Witches aren't gender-specific; men are witches too. Advocating for one's self on the spiritual plane would be part of it for many, but at its most basic, a witch is any person who practices witchcraft.
