I’ve just got a date to oral surgery to have my wisdom tooth removed today after waiting since February. I’m nervous regarding this and wondering what to expect and what to do afterwards during especially with it recovering and if I need someone with me especially I’ll be an nervous wreck so if I needed to would they give me anything to help calm me down for the nerves as I have really bad anxiety?

Hi. Are you having a general anaesthetic? I had mine out under local anaesthetic. I had them all out, but in two separate appointments, as they did one side at a time. I made it through!! One side was easier than the other tbh. Good luck.

I’m having it under done local but seen I can have sedation if request as I’ve had bad experience from when I was younger having an tooth removed which is making me more anxious and worried

I would go for sedation if you can. Don't risk it. I had one side extracted easily but the other side......

Thank you I’ll ask has I’m having my lower left side removed

I had mine done under local (2 teeth on one side) - it was painless - even the jab to get the anaesthetic in there wasn't more than a little spike - and he was done in under 20 mins, I was very impressed with the efficiency.

Immediately after I was fine, but once the numbing had worn off I needed the codeine he prescribed, and basically felt like I'd been kicked in the head - took about a week for the swelling and achy pain to go away.

Midgetchloe · 09/09/2025 10:07

Do you know what recovery like and what I need to do during the recovery and do they prescribe anything else or only codine is advise to go to work next day or not as I work as an accountant so I spend quite a lot of the day answer phones and talking

I had the little wadding tubes to keep in there for a few hours after, and not to eat/drink (mind you, I didn't really want to). He recommended a medicated mouthwash (who's name I've forgotten) which I used for a few days, but TBH, it was just the bruising and swelling after the first day.

No sedation, so I drove home, was perfectly fine picking up the kids, although I felt a bit sorry for myself that evening and got takeaway for them!

I’m the biggest scaredy cat in the world. I had such bad anxiety before one of my upper wisdom tooth was due to be removed that I could barely walk into the surgery. No sedation. No GA. The dentist just numbed the area. I was laying there thinking please let her hurry up and get on with it. Next thing I knew it was out. Didn’t feel a thing. It was incredible. You’ll be fine x

Midgetchloe · 09/09/2025 10:21

do they’ve prescribed antibotics I’ve read that they do but some people saying they don’t but do prescribe something and even with LA they’ve had the following day off work I’m not sure if I do despite being an accountant and talking all day on phones and to colleagues

Had mine out a fortnight ago. Took 10 minutes. Paracetamol was enough for three days afterwards. Salt water rinsed after food. Healed in four days. No exercise for two days then back to normal. Back to work the next day and I work in a strenuous job - 10000 steps in four hours strenuous, clambering up and down stairs with heavy boxes etc.
nowhere near as bad as I was expecting and I’m a nervous patient who cries and shakes. Could talk normally immediately. No antibiotics unless you get an infection.

SouthernNights59 · 09/09/2025 10:30

I had a lower wisdom tooth extracted recently and did meals on wheels an hour later! I did have to take painkillers for nine days afterwards, but it wasn't too bad, and the extraction itself was very quick. Don't overthink it.

NewlyBouffant · 09/09/2025 10:30

I was a nervous dentistry patient after skme barbaric treatment as a child - I've only got 20 adult teeth as the rest were pulled (along with various baby teeth) for orthodontics.

I was terrified when I had my first filling as an adult, expecting the same, but these days they use numbing cream and then enough local anaesthetic to numb a horse, and are kind during it as well. Makes all the difference. Good luck.

OuterSpaceCadet · 16/09/2025 18:22

I had one out under local, sitting in a chair. They were SO lovely, chatty and reassuring. They let me bring my partner in to hold my hand!! It was so quick I didn't realise they'd done it.

Arran2024 · 16/09/2025 18:31

Presumably OP has had it removed by now, so I can tell what happened to me.

I had to have all four out and it was done at the Glasgow dental hospital. I was persuaded I didnt need a GA, so it was done under local.

They took one side out then a few weeks later the second side.

The second side was absolutely fine, no problem, but the first side, well, the bottom tooth was incredibly difficult for the dentist to extract. The dentist was getting increasingly frustrated, it was a real blood bath, but the problem was afterwards. I have never been in so much pain ever. And my face was swollen and black and blue.

I was in agony for over a week. It is my single worse experience ever.

Midgetchloe · 16/09/2025 18:32

Yes I had it removed last week and on Thursday I had to go back I got an infection to the point it was going toward my throat and under my eye had 5 days course gone back today to get it looked at and it’s still infected and on another 5 days course

I don't see the feminist angle here.

NotMyNigelFarage · 18/09/2025 22:27

I did have two out a few months ago. Zero pain during the removal. They were wiggling them back and forth and I could hear cracking sounds but no pain whatsoever despite them taking a bit of bone off with one.

I didn’t know what to put it as the topic

Fair enough. Either way, I don't think you should be worried. It was like ten minutes for the removal and I managed with ibuprofen.

Midgetchloe · 19/09/2025 01:55

It took 40 mins for mine to be removed and I’ve ended up with a really bad infection

Sorry, hope the antibiotics are working
