Angry man in cafe

Sitting in Costa, trying to work. Listening to an angry middle aged man haranguing a woman who I presume is his wife. Loudly, with no self awareness.

The cafe is distinctly quieter than it was than when he came in. All the tables around them have been vacated. I'm sitting on the other side of the room and I can hear every word he's saying,

I'm sick of men who think their voices are so important they can impose them on all and sundry. And I feel for his wife too, whether it's a marital argument or he's being an arse, doing it so loudly in public is horrible.

There should be a public service announcement on news channels and middle-aged- bloke media, 'Your voice is no longer the authority. Learn to shut up.'

Totally agree OP.
Whats he saying?

TheAmusedQuail · 12/07/2025 15:01

I think it's about an adult step-child. He vehemently disagrees with the things her mother 'allows' her to do and thinks she should leave her to get on with it.

I don't even know the person he's talking to / about / who he is and I want to tell him to fuck off and shut up.

He's getting revved up again now. FFS

Ime men are always like that.
You can't win. Just get up & leave & hope everyone else does. Then Costa might realise why they're losing business.

“Mate can turn the volume down a bit?”

I'd be tempted to say something similar. Unless he looked like the chavvy violent type which doesn't sound the case.

Enough4me · 14/07/2025 00:14

I recognise the type from your description and it's not all men. My partner is the size of a rugby player and naturally has a deep voice but thankfully (or I wouldn't be with him) one of those men.
I think it stems from ego issues to try to "big" themselves up and be dominant.

TomatoSandwiches · 14/07/2025 00:30

" Excuse me but I can hear all your personal business, lets use our indoor voices hmm "

Nt23 · 14/07/2025 17:06

I'm in no way defending this man but "let's use our indoor voices" is a ridiculous choice of phrase.

Arlanymor · 14/07/2025 17:09

Some conversations shouldn't be had in public - at any volume.

TheAmusedQuail · 14/07/2025 17:10

Ironically, he wasn't a big bloke. But he definitely had that assumption of his own self importance that some blokes have.

His poor wife.

It's times like this I am glad I'm deaf, because every time I encountered shit like this would be a 'STFU moment'.

@TheAmusedQuail There should be a public service announcement on news channels and middle-aged- bloke media, 'Your voice is no longer the authority. Learn to shut up.'

I get the opposite criticism, is that I have a tendency to sit in silence, and my voice is quiet whenever I do speak. You can't have it both ways.

OreoBoo · 28/07/2025 21:52

I hate this kind of thing. I wish I was brave enough to shout "shut up!" at the top of my voice.

Me too! I passively aggressively mutter 'Shut up' knowing he can't hear me over the sound of his own voice. Pointless!

It's a public place and could be equally annoying if it was a group of friends laughing loudly, a crying baby or anything loud and intrusive.
He is probably oblivious of the fact that others do not want to listen. Can you move tables or put on headphones?

I think she's probably gone home by now, given that the thread dates from July last year...

Lol. God, can you imagine if she was still there.

franke · 04/04/2026 16:48

@SardinesOnButteredToast 😂 But I bet he's still haranguing his poor wife.
Somewhere.

MsAmerica · 08/04/2026 03:00

Always possible that one or the other of them is hard of hearing.
