The Law Society calls us “cis” too

I can’t get the link to work, but my profession’s weekly magazine has an article on how firms should help employees going through the peri menopause, yet calls us “cis women”.

I’d hoped the Law Society would not swallow the cool aid given that legal documents always use “gender” to mean “sex”. It seems not. Sigh.

In the article

Whilst predominantly experienced by cisgender women, the impacts of menopause may differ in relation to other protected characteristics, for example it can affect people of all genders and ages (trans men and non-binary people can also go through menopause)

Would be much better written as

The menopause* affects all women, no matter how they identify (eg as* trans men or as non-binary).

Ignore stupid bold!

Fair enough @sawdustformypony . The editor of the Gazette still decided to publish it.

The Law Society has been captured for some time. Not quite as captured as the SRA which sits at number 11 of Stonewall's top 100 employers, but captured none the less.

I find it embarrassing, quite frankly, that any firm or body linked with the law is spouting this kind of shit. It's frustrating that my choice of firm is limited due to having to avoid the captured ones!

MinnieMountain · 18/10/2024 20:12

Really @NoWordForFluffy ? Oh dear.

I’ve been working for a licensed conveyancers for the last 7 years. The owners sold to a larger company last year, so I fear this sort of crap coming.

What's this thread about?

Cis and cisgender are words in use? Yes, look up any major dictionary. This seems to be a recurring topic on this board. Dictionaries aren't going to remove any given word just because mumsnet and elon musk don't like it.

Took you a while to spot this thread.
We women are not cis, we are women. No need for unnecessary prefixes thank you.

Why not?

After all they put any given words into the dictionary so I am sure they can also take them out...

Even ignoring the "all genders" thing, "people of all ages" don't experience menopause. Ever met a toddler in menopause? It's frightening that legal bodies are writing such inaccurate things in order to get on the Stonewall rankings, which many companies have now left due to them being so discredited.

outdamnedspots · 21/10/2024 09:57

Absolutely, @Konfuzzled . The whole thing is crap. Dangerous, inaccurate crap.

I am a hetrosexual adult human female but if people want to use gender identity language to describe me it would not be correct to call me a Cisgender woman.

I don't have a gender identity therefore I would fall under the trans umbrella as an agender person. I also wouldn't be considered hetrosexual under GI language as I am attracted to the male sex whatever their gender so that makes me pansexual.
