'Afghan women meet in Albania in ‘act of defiance’ against Taliban crackdown'

Incredible bravery, may they be protected.
"More than 130 Afghan women have gathered in Albania at an All Afghan Women summit, in an attempt to develop a united voice representing the women and girls of Afghanistan in the fight against the ongoing assault on human rights by the Taliban.
Some women who attempted to reach the summit from inside Afghanistan were prevented from travelling, pulled off flights in Pakistan or stopped at borders. Other women have travelled from countries including Iran, Canada, the UK and the US where they are living as refugees."

At least 600 dead in earthquake near Jalalabad

AMillionTomorrows · 01/09/2025 13:39

What happens to the injured women after this earthquake? Are they denied access to treatment?

Lalgarh · 01/09/2025 13:47

That's the million dollar question.

would they allow male medics to treat injured women

AMillionTomorrows · 01/09/2025 16:29

Are any news outlets mentioning the women? I’ve seen photos of men being treated but I know women aren’t allowed to be photographed.

Sky had an online interview with a guy in Kabul saying of course you should give the Taliban money for this. They didn't ask if women were being rescued.

BBC has a report from Yogita Limaye that they prefaced by saying "reporting under Taliban restrictions". Didn't mention if women were being treated but mentioned lots of ppl in hospital from what recall

Lalgarh · 05/09/2025 21:15

I should have known. Male rescuers are forbidden from rescuing unrelated women, or straight out ignoring injured women

Meanwhile, the guardian today carries reports of appeals from aid agencies. Are they also subject to these restrictions? I suspect they would be but, maybe I've not read this thoroughly, it doesn't mention any disparities in treatment or these incidents

Even less hope for women now as all access to the internet has been cut by the Taliban. Yes some men might suffer but women, again, will suffer the most.
Afghan women are in a prison of the worst kind.

For many women, the internet was their last resource. An internet shutdown threatens to end this.

Fuckers.

Not a great surprise, as India doesn't exactly have a shining reputation on women's rights. But one might have hoped, if nothing more noble inspired them, they might at least want to needle a friend of Pakistan by having some women in the press pack.

These woman need to be refugees in Britain. These are the people we should be looking after.

Taliban Foreign minister concedes to meet monstrous regiment of wimmin

". ...The group also criticised male journalists who attended Friday's conference for not standing up for their female colleagues. "In moments like these, silence can be seen as complicity in normalising gender discrimination," the statement said.

Amid growing outrage in India, Muttaqi's team sent out fresh invitations for Sunday's interaction, describing it as an "inclusive" event open to all media personnel.

It's not clear what led to the second press meet - though there is no official confirmation, there has been some speculation that the Indian government may have intervened..."

Good!

Far too little, still, but better than the absolute nothingness the previous attempt.
