My towns family friendly pride event took place today. They're celebrating it on Facebook, think that'll be a complaint tomorrow

I was at work all day, so happily missed it. Then this popped up as I was scrolling FB on the bus home.

What an item goal. Family friendly with the obligatory woman face and pornified name. Tonight's task will be to email a complaint. What are we saying to our young people?

Were they performers with their drag names on the flyers? Or were they attendees with whom one of the organisers was posing?

InflagranteDelicto · 23/08/2024 19:21

The first is a performer. On near the end of the event. Tbh, I follow the town council on FB for information, I paid no attention to the pride stuff in the same way I pay no attention to anything they post about an estate on the opposite side of town- it's not relevant to me.

This was the image that just popped up in my feed, and as a random standalone post, I find it unpleasant and tawdry.

I think this is not a hill worth dying on.

Summerhillsquare · 24/08/2024 19:14

Oh the names give away the sexism, don't they? I'm all for satire, but that's just despising women.

SirChenjins · 24/08/2024 19:19

Can you imagine the uproar if instead of grim caricatures of women they blacked up and called themselves offensive names that made fun of minority ethnic groups? Or sat in wheelchairs and made fun of disabled people with offensive names?

The misogyny could not be clearer.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2024 19:21

Were the names visible anywhere at the event?

Angrymum22 · 24/08/2024 19:22

I believe that drag artists are as offensive as the Black and white minstrel show was.
I know it’s all supposed to be a bit of a laugh but in any other industry they wouldn’t get away with it.

Soubriquet · 24/08/2024 19:24

Is that seriously Prossie Tot?

that’s disturbing

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2024 19:57

Tbf, is that not pretty standard fare for Brighton?

SirChenjins · 24/08/2024 20:43

Yep, it’s standard - but as someone upthread rightly mentioned the Black and White Minstrel comparison, that was also standard in the 60s and 70s. Doesn’t mean it should be acceptable.

mitogoshi · 24/08/2024 20:59

Why does it matter to if men want to wear make up and wear dresses? By saying that it's not right you are actually encouraging people who wish the wear the other sex's clothes to believe they must be trans. My argument is is absolutely fine for men to wear make up and frilly dresses, but a woman it does not make you

Because they’re not just wearing the makeup and clothes that women wear - they are presenting as caricatures with offensive and sexualised names - Felicity sucks well ffs. If I was to black up and call myself some offensive name referencing black people I’d be rightly shown the door - but because it’s misogynistic blokes doing it then it’s ok Hmm
