Why do we keep putting women into subcultures?

cupcaske123 · 10/08/2024 20:00

The backdrop for these trends is a real crisis for women’s rights and safety. Everywhere, there is a growing backlash to gender equality, manifesting in the popularity of misogynistic alpha-influencers and a general move away from feminism among younger generations

do 'we' keep doing that? Or does the media? Why doesn't the Guardian ask itself why it publishes such twaddle

Edingril · 11/08/2024 02:05

We?

This is a weird one, because Kamala Harris' campaign group has kind of claimed this for some social "cool" but she definitely doesn't actually fit in this! From what i understand about Brat summer from the teenagers around me its basically women getting drunk and doing recreational drugs lol

Heretotalk1207538 · 11/08/2024 02:37

It makes no sense to me a brat is someone whos spoilt lol! this is a new term for me…theres men out there that do the same i think its the internet and media trying to make something of nothing again. Poor artical quite boring really…alot more interesting topics to talk about?

massive agree - lets stop the judging and monitoring of women's lives on this kind of micro level
We are always asked to justify life choices in ways men just arent. We should all refuse to engage with it

Heretotalk1207538 · 11/08/2024 03:32

More interesting to talk about the transgender debate if u ask me! That will really get people going 😂

I’m still confused about how poor or non existent policing of domestic violence incidents is dressed up as rising misogyny. If police don’t intervene or provide adequate protection for victims the death toll of women will rise and it has nothing to do with Andrew Tate. I don’t understand why 20 years ago the media would have done a deep dive on DV and the failures in policing strategies, but today the media is like ‘Misogyny WTF’

Heretotalk1207538 · 11/08/2024 03:42

Whats domestic violence got to do with this?

MrsJamin · 11/08/2024 05:06

Brat is a new album by Charlie xcx and many people are following her "brat summer" which generally involves being a bit of a mess, quite the antithesis to last year's barbie summer.

It looks like a completely silly 'Lifestyle'-type article, one of very very many similar articles (usually about recipes or cleansers or some such ) that just critique alleged 'trends' that last weeks' lifestyle journalism has invented.

A singer called Charlie XCX released an album called Brat and now it's an online trend defining a certain type of woman.

Apparently it's a specific type of woman who doesn't conform to expectations, 'It is a girl “who feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of, like, parties through it”.' or a "girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes”

.

I'm not entirely sure but I think Harris has been called a Brat because it has an it girl aesthetic and because it isn't meant to conform to expectations.

It looks like a completely silly 'Lifestyle'-type article, one of very very many similar articles (usually about recipes or cleansers or some such ) that just critique alleged 'trends' that last weeks' lifestyle journalism has invented.

The point of the article is that these online trends which rake up millions of views, are regressive in that they portray a traditional, shallow view of femininity. They give a message that it's cool to be feminine but being feminine is portrayed as ditzy and unable to do things.

Yeah, but the article itself speaks of these trends as being "mindlessly parroted without much thought or seriousness",
"more of a meme than a sincere suggestion for a new, unhinged way of living", etc. And her sources include a singer promoting her album. The journalistic fakery lies in the attempt to confect a significant social trend out of a combination of meming and branding.

I think it is the heading that makes it seem so annoyingly fake - "Why do we keep putting women into subcultures""

WE don't. A few kids on forums and a few journos rewriting press releases are the ones who are playing with these themes.

According to the article there have been countless trends including trad wives, mob wives and hot girl, feral girl, lazy girl and so on. Which not only have massive online interest but inform fashion, hairstyles and hobbies and include marketing and advertising campaigns. These fluffy depictions of womanhood detract from feminism and coincide with the rise in online misogynist influencers.

The article uses DV deaths to claim that we are grappling with rising levels of misogyny. This gets women panicking about internet generated fads. The media should instead be investigating why the police and courts are failing to keep women safe.
